Accessorize Me

Dear ESB,

My best friend is getting married to his boyfriend in October, and has asked me to be in the wedding party, to which I said HELL YES!! I'm super stoked. My problem is that I'm having difficulty figuring out what the hell to wear. The restrictions we have been given is that we should wear their wedding colors (black, red, and hot pink). The other important factor is that the wedding is taking place in the woods in Maryland. We're staying at a camp in the woods all weekend. I've almost definitely decided to wear a black jumpsuit (this one, specifically), but I'm having trouble tying the other wedding colors into my outfit.

While I don't think I'll be kicked out of the wedding party for just wearing all black, it would be boring and not in the spirit of their request. First, I tried to look for red shoes (I'm a size 9), but the options that I could find were pretty ugly, or there was no way that I would be able to walk in them in the woods. So, I found a pair of black suede heels that I really like...and then I got stuck. I have no idea how to incorporate one of the other wedding colors into my outfit, let alone both of them.

My style is very simple. Jeans and t-shirts for day-to-day and tailored, nicely cut clothes with very few embellishments, and almost no accessories when I'm dressing up (it sounds really boring the way I described it, but I actually find it really fun, and, more importantly, very me). I'm also a big fan of anything menswear inspired, and I will not wear ruffles of any description.

I'm still open to shoe suggestions, but I'm mostly looking for help on how to spice this whole thing up with a belt, or jewelry. Bottom line: I need help! Big time! He's my best friend and I want to look awesome at his wedding!

Thanks,
Don't Hate Me Because I Love Jumpsuits

Why does everyone always want to spice things up with a belt??

Has anyone ever SUCCESSFULLY spiced things up with a belt?

YOU DON'T EVEN LIKE ACCESSORIES

If you must go along with his hideous color scheme, you know you have to tie it in with the shoes.

I'm not mad at these chunkers from Zara. (v. woods-worthy)

  1. Trolling ASOS' site (my fave) has turned up these camp-friendly red suede shoes and these pretty pink earrings.

    studded flats

    buckled booties

    rhinestone earrings

    1. Love the buckled booties and those rhinestone earrings, but not together.

    2. I'd get these shoes (on sale!) from Sole Society (actual site but you might need to login to view).

      Or these from Shoe Mint.

And if you happen to change your outfit, this Mara Hoffman dress would fit the bill.

These earrings are colorful, but not too over-the-top.

And this Marc Jacobs bracelet is pretty awesome.

Forget the belt or scarf, go with lots of bracelets.

  2. What about a scarf? You could tie the wedding colors in with this or this. And it might come in handy in the woods in October in Maryland!

    1. Seriously? Stars? I'm 100% positive my 14 year old cousin has that first scarf.

  3. Agreed. Go with red shoes, and you're good. Paint your nails pink for the wedding. Done and done.

For what it's worth, I love those free people shoes, but they don't look very woods-friendly. What about these?

  7. I actually prefer black shoes with this one, especially as it sounds like this suits your style better. Something about the red shoes is making the whole thing too choppy.

Skip the belt. Go with one or two pieces of red or pink jewelry. Go for subtle if that's your style, or pick one bold item and call it a day.

Does rose gold count as pink?

Or, depending on how low it hangs, <a href="http://ofakind.com/editions/1246-GATSBY-NECKLACE#.Ui4T1sZQHfU>this</a> could work in pink.

  9. Working within the limitations of the questionable colour scheme, if I were you I would probably go with black shoes, black jumpsuit and a big old piece of jewellery.

    Swarovski.

    Vivienne

Or you could throw out any pretence of style..

Failing that you can't go wrong with red lips and hot pink nails.

  12. Never in my life have I said these words: I'm kind of loving that jumpsuit.

And I second the lips+nails for color. And red shoes are always a good idea.

    1. ME TOO. I normally hate jumpsuits, but I totally want this. And RED. yes.

  13. I vote pink shoes over red - seems slightly less tired that way.
These have a chunky heel and aren't a horrible shade.

    2. She could always get those horrible plastic tips for her heels so she doesn't sink in to the ground... I might even consider it for those perf red/pink heels.

    3. The problem with focusing on shoes to meet the color requirement is that they won't be visible in most photos (which, let's be honest, is the reason there is a dress code in the first place).
But these LRs are the best thing, so maybe that + lipstick is the winner?

  15. Dannijo For sure. I second everyone else who's said black shoes are going to be best. Pick a cuff or necklace and you're good to go. I prefer this one, but there are tons of options.

    1. I have red hair already (I mean, orange, but whatever) and I really really wanted to do it ombre pink and then that, like, BLEW UP everywhere. I don't want "Pinterest hair" so I never did it. Le sigh.

    5. Ombre suggester here- I was kinda kidding (unless the OP wants to, in which case fuck yes it'll look cool with a flower crown too). But isn't an expensive, multi-step process to make your hair pinnable the ultimate grooms-maid sacrifice? (Well, short of getting a tattoo in the wedding's color scheme-- pink and red sleeve, anyone?)

  18. Yeah um I'd do a belt like this.

Very 70s, which I know, since I was there. And then add some pink booties. Like this.

  19. If I was styling it is do a gold sheet metal belt (pretty sure Zara has one) those fabulous pink and red LR pumps (hideous plastic tips to prevent sinkage and all) and a chunky red/pink/gold necklace. Minimal makeup, flawless skin, done eyebrows, mascara, inner rim eyeliner, and a hint of pink on lips and cheeks and call it done. I'm not a huge accessories girl myself and I find I'm much happier if my arms are unhindered... But that may be just me. (Sorry I'm on my phone or I'd link the fuck out of this shit)

  20. Does it have to be a belt? I like the idea of keeping the jumpsuit simple and adding jewelry. Either a statement necklace or bracelets?

  21. OP here. Now there's a flower crown in the mix. Normally I wouldn't be excited about the prospect of a flower crown, however, the groom's sister is making them, and she's kind of awesome. She's the creative director of Stone Fox Bride, and I'm actually kind of stoked to wear a flower crown that she makes. It does simplify the accessorizing process.

I really appreciated the person who made the point that the shoes will not be seen in the pictures. Additionally, the grooms have strongly advised us against wearing heels. They are both men after all, and therefore really don't get it, but I'm willing to take their advice. I currently own two pairs of shoes that I think could both be fun options: a pair of patent leather oxfords, and a pair of red Supergas. I've been looking for an excuse to get a pair of ballet flats, so those are maybe another option if I find a pair I like in the mean time. But I can see myself rocking a jumpsuit, a flower crown and some red sneakers. Also I love the idea of bright red or pink lips and nails. So I think that's what I'm going to focus on.

Thanks everyone for your help and opinions! I promise not to wear a scarf!

    2. p.s. we will be needing photos.

    3. Brilliant! Problem solved.

I vote oxfords 100x over the supergas. Bring those as your dancing shoes.

      And yes, pictures, please.

  22. Um, this wedding sounds really cold to me. Why not accessorize with this blazer and pink nails? (more sizes here?)

Obvs you can take off the coat to dance and/or pose with it over your shoulder.

  23. Just wear a red ribbon in your hair and some red lipstick.

    Forget everything else.
