Hey ESB,
Longtime listener, first time caller.
So I've been going over the whole veil debate, or rather, I've firmly decided against the veil, but perhaps I don't want a naked head. At first I thought one of my artist friends could make a rad hair clip/headpiece out of vintage pearlized buttons (he makes magic with buttons). My FH is really into the silent movie actress look and casually asked if I would be wearing some sort of Cleopatra headpiece.
Then I started getting all the pieces together, the dress, the shoes, my grandmother's jewelry (awesome and deco), and I'm starting to think I'm going to look like Kim Kardashian if I wear anything on my head. Is there such thing as a hey-this-looks-so-cool-and-not-overdone headpiece?
Thanks!

THIS CALLS FOR A BUTTON BOUQUET
ReplyDeleteno to a headpiece as cool as it would be, your other pieces are good as is!
ReplyDeleteI'm prone to minimalism, so to me your Grandma's jewelry plus a headpiece sounds like too much going on. But that really depends on the jewelry...and if you keep the headpiece simple, it might be just the thing to pull your whole look together. When you said Cleopatra I immediately thought of something like this or this or this. Head-chains are the new veil, I'm tellin ya.
ReplyDeleteI love this head chain but you've got to go easy on the jewelry. Otherwise it will look to costume-y.
DeleteI like the first one Tonia linked to (but specifically worn as it is in that first photo). It's fairly simple, though, and not necessarily along the lines your FH might be hoping.
ReplyDeleteI don't normally like stuff going straight across the forehead (sweatband style), but this bride looks gorgeous.
As for something large (like in ESB's photo choice)...I think it takes a very particular person to pull of something showy. If you are feeling doubtful, you are probably not that person.
I think that might be a *necklace* she's wearing on her head.
DeleteI honestly can't help but think head chains are so dated and in 15 years you'll look back and think you look ridiculous. When it came to a wedding look, I always prefer going classic and timeless. Considering the gorgeous dress and shoes you've chosen, you will be classically beautiful as well. Don't date yourself with a fad headpiece. That's my advice.
ReplyDeleteEh, I think we're all going to look dated no matter what. You should just make sure you really love what you wear so that even if it's dated you can laugh about the goofy things we loved "back then."
DeleteGood point! Now that puffy sleeved dresses are gone, it can't ever be as bad as it was 20 years ago.
DeleteCleopatra headpiece?? Unless you're a silent movie actress in a period piece, no Cleopatra-like headpieces. Ever.
ReplyDeleteAnd seriously, you've got fancy shoes, jewelry, AND dress. Leave well enough alone.
OP here. I think I'm going to have to say "Fuck the headpiece". Thank you all for the help!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll be Cleopatra for Halloween instead, because that's when you dress in costume, right?
I personally think that she rocked this head piece. Maybe ample hair is the prerequisite?
ReplyDeleteI really love the modern-deco thing you have going. I would suggest a deco-lookin' hair comb to stick in your hair.
ReplyDeleteRodarte (sold out there though).
Moody broody vintage
Okay this costs $8500 but come on.
Totally agree. I am inclined to think that all brides look good with *something* in their hair, otherwise they're just wearing a... white dress.
DeleteThose combs are gorgeous.
Here's a thing I can't stop thinking about. Seen via some Internet runway or other. A whole bunch of criss-crossed white bobby pins under an updo and up the side of the hair. Looked really cool, like a flock of abstract slightly brutalized birds. But in a good way.
ReplyDeleteHeadpieces are really cool and they are definitely the trend of summer with legchains.
