my *new* new year's resolution (spoiler alert: IT INVOLVES TACOS)

my new year's resolutions are bumming me out.

i do this to myself every year. tell myself i'm going to write every morning, then spiral into depression and anger when i don't write (or don't like what i'm writing) and drink whiskey while watching the bachelor and playing fucking letterpress for four hours in a row just to punish myself.

anyhoo.

here's my new resolution.

EAT TACOS.

try a new taco place once a week, or once a month, or whenever i fucking feel like it.

just. eat. tacos.

the photo is my own, from Tacodeli in Austin, which, HOLY SHIT.

i now plan to eat my way through the 10 Essential LA Tacos. if the rest of the recommends are anywhere near as good as Guisados....

    2. I'm so glad you liked it! Naurnie, get the Cowboy taco. It's Nick's favorite, and ESB may or may not agree.

    3. now i have to go look at the menu. i can't remember which one was my fave...

    4. yeah, no, i'm pretty sure it was the cowboy.

    5. Yeah, you made sure to tweet me when you ate it. It was definitely the Cowboy :-)

  2. El Chato on Olympic and La Brea. I'm an L.A-native and this is my favorite place for tacos, a burrito, and an horchata — all for less than $10. It was the best/worst thing ever when I used to live within walking distance to El Chato.

  3. I just made some awesome tacos last night with some leftover pulled pork I made, spinach, chopped red bell pepper, shredded sharp cheddar, and "medium" salsa, on whole wheat wraps. Never turning back to ground beef tacos again.

    1. I do the same thing w left over pulled pork! I crisp it up and then taco it up. I also love shrimp tacos. Ground beef gets boring... I've made curry tacos once just to change it up!

  4. Best resolution ever! I love fun resolutions - mine this year is to get into bloody marys. I've gotten into them, and the year has been a blast so far.

Also, love Tacodeli! If you are in Austin again, Torchy's Tacos is a must.

    1. You mean flour tortillas? You must have never had them freshly made. There is nothing better.

    2. you're both wrong.

real tacos are made with fresh CORN tortillas.

  7. ESB, who's your lady for this season?

    1. No, for The Bachelor. What lady (I use that term loosely in this case) will he pick?

    2. oh god. i've blocked them all out.

  9. I totally recognized the tacos in the picture as TacoDeli's before reading the caption. What does this say about me?! (I did grow up about 2 min. from a TacoDeli location...)

  10. "then spiral into depression and anger when i don't write (or don't like what i'm writing) and".... come read esb. That's literally what I've just done.

  11. My husband brought me back a bag of tortillas from Cinco Puntos, which make the best gluten-free breakfast when toasted.

    My favorite tacos are these.

    Don't tell!

  13. WELL. If you fancy a trip down the coast a little, the best ones are in Tijuana. Maybe a road trip? My husband is from there and I can give you a list of the best stalls if you want. They are mindblowing.

  14. I've been trying to write more too. This is really fruity but have you tried The Artist's Way? I'm not awesome about doing morning pages but when I do them, something interesting almost always happens. Sometimes it's an insight into what is wrong with me but often I get so annoyed with "journaling" and my own inner monologue that I just start writing the thing I was afraid to work on.

    1. fruity might be what i need right about now.

    2. Before I read that book, my writing "process" was "drink until the mean voice goes away." My skin looks much better now that I'm on the fruity path.
Also, read ye olde Shitty First Drafts essay if you haven't lately!

  15. Hot's Kitchen in Hermosa Beach. I miss it so much and question why I left California.

  16. I was in Austin last oct (with plans to move there from LI which everyone keeps telling me I'm crazy it's hot but it's currently 12 degrees here so they can stick it) and loved torchys as well as taco xpress. Highly recommend both! And I must add the oasis on lake Travis is terrible! Save your money everyone! And I followed your Austin guide when we were down there!

  17. i generally laugh/shudder at motivational quotes, but--desperate times call for desperate measures-- this one resonated with me, as i try to write my dissertation: You have to WANT it more than you are afraid of it. So that's how I'm pumping myself up to write in the mornings now!

  19. how la estrella isn't on there, i'll never know. they're in pasadena and highland park. they might also have a truck somewhere. i'm partial to their cabeza. they also make a mean fish taco, but pretty sure you can't go that route because of the batter. this is the best resolution.

    1. the guisados "quesadilla" taco, which is just basically a big square of fried cheese on a tortilla, is the best thing on the (very excellent) menu.

  21. Taco's mess with my stomach, so my New Year's Resolution was to give myself a weekly pedicure. Right now I'm sporting some bubble gum pink nails, and next week it's mint green.

  24. This is genius. In fact, I think I'll resolve to eat at least one Trader Joe's Candy Cane Joe Joes EVERY DAY! This is fun!!! Why have I never thought of this before??

  25. This is why ESB is the best wedding blog.
Mexican food is the reason I might move to California. That and the fact that it was twelve degrees in Central Park this morning.

  26. Grew up in Southern California and now live in the South and I miss [good] tacos SO BAD! I can make some decent ones at home (and y'all homemade tortillas are fantastic and actually pretty easy - I use this recipe) but there's nothing like the real deal.

Anyhow, awesome resolution. I've been gone too long to recommend any places out west, but if you're ever in San Antonio, get thee to Taco Taco.

  27. Need to send you D's round up of parking lot taco joints, in case you don't have them already.

  28. So I am having tacos for dinner tonight since I have been thinking of them since yesterday. Cheers esb, GOOD IDEA.
