After a lengthy engagement, my fiance and I are finally getting married in April. I love my engagement ring: vintage-style halo setting in platinum. Now, on to the wedding band. I know we've already covered if the bride and groom's (or bride and bride's or groom and groom's) need to match, but does MY wedding band need to match my engagement ring? Is having a rose gold band with a platinum engagement ring ridiculous? I can't tell.
THANK YOU!

I wear a platinum engagement ring, a rose gold solid band, and yellow gold with a few tiny diamonds. I get compliments galore because it is coordinated, but not matchy. Matchy is boring.
ReplyDeleteDo you ever go on Get Off My Internets? In the comments, people are always responding with GIFs. I wish we could image respond on ESB. It'd generally be super helpful for shopping posts but for this post I just want to upload this GIF.
ReplyDeletei'm still sorta ish-y on gifs.

Answer.
BOTH of those made me laugh out loud.

ReplyDeleteOoh, pics!
DeleteThat's what I have - a rose gold textured wedding band (Bario Neal) with vintage platinum engagement ring. Though I stopped wearing the engagement ring a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wear my engagement ring on my right finger, because I love how it looks on its own.
ReplyDeleteI originally had a white gold vintage ring set, with the engagement ring having a little flower in the center with a teeny tiny diamond, and the wedding band has two little leaves that set in behind the flower. When my engagement ring broke for the second time in a year (apparently 10k white gold rings made in the 70s and bought off of Ebay are made to last?!) I said screw it, I'm sick of being twee anyways, and got a silver Macha Russian Chain ring to wear with my band and it looks awesome-i wish i could have sprung for the gold version for a more mis-matchy look!
ReplyDeleteCHAIN RING FTW!
DeleteSo aesthetically, they don't need to match, but I wonder whether the ring made of harder metal (say, platinum) might destroy the ring made of softer metal (say, gold) over a lifetime of wear. Is this an issue? I have a lovely platinum heirloom engagement ring, but I worry if I go with a gold wedding band it will be destroyed by the harder platinum.
ReplyDeleteevery jeweller I have been to says you need the wedding band to be the same hardness as the engagement ring or it will wear down over time (ie 18k e-ring? you need an 18k band)
DeleteI was going to say the same thing...
Deleteyeah but then again you can always get them built up again if they wear down ...
Deleteyou can't get an antique 'built up again'

ReplyDeletethere is also the option of wearing them on different hands.
ReplyDeleteNeither I or my huzzband even have wedding bands. I still wear my engagement ring. We eloped w/o rings and have been too lazy/broke/eh to bother with them. The lack of rings doesn't mean we don't have a big ass marriage certificate that annoying doesn't fit into any standard size folders for safe keeping.
ReplyDeleteQuestion-asker here! Thanks for the advice, all. Sorry if my question was totally redundant and ridiculous. I'm neeew heeereeee.
ReplyDeleteThey so don't have to match. And you don't have to wear both at the same time, on the same finger. My wedding band is peach gold (between rose and yellow) and I wear it most of the time. My e-ring is white gold with sapphires. It mostly sits in a pretty box, but I wear it occasionally when it goes with an outfit better. I don't really like wearing rings, so one at a time is more than enough!
ReplyDeletei have a plat e-ring and a solid flat 2mm catbird rose gold comfort fit band. i love them to death
