Do you ever worry that underneath it all you might just be a lazy person?

I worry about that quite a bit.

  2. ^ ditto!

but yes, i worry a lot about how my underlying laziness is mismatched with almost all of my life goals and most people's expectations of me. ACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK indeed.

  3. Awareness goes a long way towards fixing most personality flaws. . .or at least mediating them! Don't worry ESB, I'm sure you're unlazy enough:)

  4. I worry about it whenever I just want to sleep in and do nothing. So.. pretty regularly.

  5. I was going to write a nice long comment but in the end laziness took over.

  6. This is me. And I really resent lazy people. Self included.

  7. I don't worry about it, I just accept it.

Also, that picture is truly terrifying.

    1. (it's really more a high level of inertia: takes a lot to get me going, takes a lot to make me stop. Which is almost worse)

  9. Omg yes. Are you me? Wait no, not possible. You have a better sense of style... There are OTHER people that think like this?!

    1. Seriously, you're surprised other people also think they're lazy? This can't be all that shocking.

  10. It's not laziness if the things you have to do are tedious, boring or stupid.

    1. Not necessarily. I know a lot of people who think their (very important) jobs are tedious, boring, and stupid, and their subsequent laziness actually causes serious problems. Your perception often doesn't equal a valid excuse.

    2. Yes it can cause serious problems if your boring job is an important one, but my point is, it's actually healthy and sane to feel a reluctance to do things which bore you to tears. Being a robot is not something to aspire to.

I don't think we should be so hard on ourselves. Being idle is good for you.

  11. For sure I'm lazy. Publicly in denial, personally I OWN it.

  12. I struggle with beating myself up over this too. It's kind of some fake bullshit though, because laziness isn't an innate, immutable moral quality that you're born with. It's warped perfectionism, unhelpful responses to pressure, stuff like that. Stuff that can be dealt with, if you want to.
Think if a friend of yours who is a jerk said, "It really bothers me that I'm such a jerk all the time, but that's who am, nothing to be done about it." You'd call bullshit and tell them to... stop acting like a jerk. No one has a jerk gene. No one has a laziness gene either.

    1. I'm too... lazy to recap this, but here's the research on why so many women grow up to have this attitude that our best and worst qualities are fixed and innate.

    4. @Frances, Thank you, what a great comment. I might print it out and pin it next to my desk (for the next time I feel like running during a conference call)

That article is really interesting - I've been reading a lot about gender stereotyping / unconsciously gendered approaches to upbringing and education recently (and looking back on my own as an extremely 'smart' girl) and I think there's a lot to it.

  14. I am. I recently spent a whole weekend making a photo-calendar online from the comfort of my sofa, while watching Project Runway. THE. WHOLE. WEEKEND.

  15. I don't think it's underlying-- I think it's front and center.
