Dear ESB,
After our destination wedding, we are having a welcome party/reception. I am contemplating this dress, but not sure if it is too prom-y.
Thoughts?
*****
Hahah I read that as "too PORN-y."
It's not too porn-y, but, since you brought it up, it does sorta look like a prom dress.
I also only thought it looked a little prom-y only after reading it might. Might just be the model, who to me looks pretty young. Maybe some "bridal" accessories will take care of that.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the styling of the model doesn't help the prom vibe. If you love the dress, you could class it up with some edgy shoes, different hair, some kind of little jacket...?
ReplyDeleteThat's a prom dress, not a wedding dress. I opened the site and thought "I wonder why ESB has prom on the brain"
ReplyDeleteI saw it and said, "man, that's an awesome, fun, blingy wedding dress" because this is a wedding blog (mostly) and then you said "prom" and I thought, "okay, that looks kinda like a prom dress." but if you wear it to a wedding, no ones going to ask where you got that prom dress, they're going to say "rad wedding dress"
ReplyDeleteIf you wear it at your wedding, it's your wedding dress. It's gorgeous. What does "prom-y" mean? And who is going to care?
ReplyDeleteIt's a dress that has to be assessed in person but I think it's fun. It looks a little prom-y on the model to me simply because of the length.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right - the length reads prom, and if it were hemmed with a little more length, that might be resolved.
DeleteMaybe I'm crazy, but adding some sort of sleeve (still wish I'd done this for my wedding dress, btw) could take it further from prom as well.
you can do better on a sparkly that tapers off design. something about this one feels off...
ReplyDeleteIf you love it wear it. If it makes you feel pretty sleep in it! I myself have had my eye on this one for a time or two....http://www.missesdressy.com/sleeveless-gown-jovani-prom-p-15816.html?gclid=CMPv5bjUo7ICFcXb4AodUysABQ
ReplyDelete100% prom dress. Actually, I'm pretty sure if I dug hard enough I could find a photo of a friend wearing something very similar at junior prom. You can do better.
ReplyDeletealso, this is an after-wedding party right? if you're not re-wearing your wedding dress why wear white and long at all? do white and short or long and color.
ReplyDeleteFrom the reviews of the dress:
ReplyDelete"It looks so pretty in the photo but in person the color of the dress is a bit more of a muddy mushroom"
and then this:
"The sequins were not a "lead" color, but an iridescent rainbow that wasn't flattering or "classy"... The minute I tried the dress on, sequins began to fall off and there were some in the original bag. Overall, it looks nice but is more suited for a prom dress than anything."
Ha. I was suddenly more on board at "muddy mushroom"
Delete(lost me again at "iridescent rainbow".)
I immediately thought prom before I read the question.
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that you asked the question means you think it's too prom-y. Especially for a welcome party - is this not even the wedding dress?
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw the picture, I thought "prom." But I agree with everyone who says styling and setting could change that. Edgy shoes, wine stained lips and really good flowers would make you look like a bride.
ReplyDeleteThese dresses are not at all blingy or sequined and if I was having a different kind 'o wedding I'd totally get one of these dresses.
ReplyDeleteThey seem a lot more welcome party where you're a bride.
It doesn't bother me, I quite like it.
ReplyDeleteProm-y is code for cheap. It looks cheap.
ReplyDeleteProm.
ReplyDeleteLooks like something The Good Witch of the North would wear to her wedding.
ReplyDeleteOr her prom.
DeleteCan always count on ESB folks to be honest :)
ReplyDeleteI wanted a party dress and not bridal dress, but want to wear white. Any fun/affordable dresses out there?
Less prom-y?

Much less prom-y. That is quite pretty and I would totally wear it to my winter wedding.
DeleteWoah, this is gorgeous. And so much more grown-up.
Deletesnag that before it's gone!! srsly. beautiful.
Deletegod that is awful. very surprised esb didn't rip into it.
ReplyDeleteew
ReplyDeleteYeah its pretty terrible.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for glitter and sequins, but this is a no.
ReplyDeleteWhat about this?
ReplyDeleteOr this?
Or this?
Does it have to be long? Because there's also Or this.
too prom-y. also, too i-wish-i-could-go-to-the-oscars-y.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the destination? I think if it's somewhere warm this dress is just too fussy. Something simple and effortless would be much better.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like something Ke$ha would wear.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! The party/second reception will be back at home in LA at a loft. It's not a redo of the wedding so I wanted something fun but still have a bridal feel.
ReplyDeleteIt's strapless. Gag. Not even that model rocks it. No one rocks in a strapless. I don't mind a little sparkle every here and again but this is a definitely resounding NO.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely a prom dress!
