Kelly's Koreatown wedding gown
I was intrigued by Kelly's mention of her "amazing dressmaker in Koreatown," so I pressed her to give us more details:
Dress maker is Ho Seok Seo (goes by Seo) at Shin Bu Bridal...
Here is my spiel for the dress...
Finding a dress for an "untraditional" girl sucks. Everything is poofy, beaded, ruffley, and looks like a cupcake. I wanted something more "boho" meets "architectural-modern" and you can imagine how hard that combo is to find! I went to every bridal boutique in Los Angeles and did not see a thing I liked. Thank goodness for Pinterest! I pulled so many photos of current and vintage gowns that had different silhouettes and fabrics I loved. We were able to pull bits and pieces of various gowns together to make the dress of my dreams. I would advise any girl to go this way. It wasn't that much more expensive and I was able to have a dress that I designed made for me to fit my body perfectly. Who loses?
AMAZING dress. I wish I had had the creativity to go through a similar process when I got married!
ReplyDeleteit was such a fun process!!!
DeleteGREAT dress, and it obviously suits your aesthetic preferences! :)
ReplyDeleteAs a plus-sized woman (usually sizes 16/18), I'd highly recommend this option. I got the exact dress I wanted, also designed by me, in a gorgeous cotton eyelet lace and cotton voile (august! no AC!), that fit over the bust AND waist at the same time (!!? so rare) for cheaper than what bridal stores were quoting as their lowest prices. Still a decent chunk of change, but realistically, far below what it could have been.
And: not going to bridal stores? Priceless.
i did not see one thing i liked at any bridal store! totes the way to go!
DeleteCool! I live in LA and plan on going to Shin Bu as well.
ReplyDeleteSeo was amazing! Good luck... it was a great experience. He got me just from a few images and one or two meetings. I definitely recommend him.
DeleteGorgeous dress! I'm the pear-est pear shape in all the land and really should have gone custom.
ReplyDeleteHow did you go about finding her? I live in NYC and would love to find someone I can trust here.
ReplyDeleteI actually found Seo on Yelp! We had a meeting first and I presented some images and he asked me some questions. After that meeting, I knew he got me. I went to school for costume and fashion design and could tell that he understood fashion and the female body. I think that is what is important to be able to make a flattering dress. Find someone who gets your personality.
DeleteAlso, those SHOES. Killer.
ReplyDeleteSEO IS AMAZING! He made my dress as well. In the ten years he's been making dresses, he's had over 2,500 clients!
ReplyDeleteGreat dress but it really bugs me when brides claim that they "designed" their dress instead of giving the dress designer full credit. Making a pinterest board is not the same as actually designing and making a dress. It's beautiful and Seo did a wonderful job on it! Thanks for digging deeper to find the designer.
ReplyDeletemarie, i did "design" my dress and Seo made it for me... I thought I was pretty clear when giving him credit for making it! I love Seo and would never want to take any credit from him. I went in every 2 weeks to make changes, do fittings, etc. It was a collaboration. I actually gave his info to ESB when asked about it so nobody had to dig deep to find out about him. I provided all of his info and actually sent him an email to let him know he would be featured on this blog!
