it's not rocket science, people.
hello!
i am writing in hopes that your readers will come up with something lovely where i am failing... my sister is going to be married next april and her only bridesmaids are my sister and me. she wants something champagne in color and either knee-length or maxi-length. we're both well endowed and about 5'6" or 5"7, i'm a size eight and she's a size ten.
here is the curveball: there is a good chance that i will be pregnant by that point (my husband and i have just started trying). so, i may not be pregnant at all, or i may be eight months along. ideally, we will wear the same dress or something very similar. we're also hoping to spend less than $200, but there is a little wiggle room on that.
any ideas?
thank you in advance for your help,
wearing champagne, but probably not drinking it

my idea is that YOU SHOULDN'T BUY YOUR DRESS YET.

Yeah, you don't need to buy your dress yet. But when you do you should most definitely get one with an empire waist just in case you develop a bump before the big day. That will ensure minimal alterations. Any dress that makes a model look preggers is probably a good bet for you. Also, my vote is for maxi length. Pregnant ankles are not pretty.
ReplyDeleteyou could try something like one of these that could work even if you are pregnant. A bit over budget, but could double as adorable maternity gear:
ReplyDeleteAlice + Olivia Wrap front halter maxi
Layered assymetrical dress
Definitely wait until three or four months out and buy something off the rack. If you're three months pregnant, you probably won't be showing much. I vote short, since I'm 5'6" and I feel like every maxi dress I've ever tried on makes me look frumpy.
ReplyDeleteIf there's only two of you, that's easy to coordinate later in the game. If it were a bunch of girlies, I'd be a bit more concerned about timing.
ReplyDeleteYes, too soon to actually buy, but still fun to browse. I like this dress (in nougat), which might be on sale by the time you make your purchase.
ReplyDeletei concur. i also feel all light taupes should henceforth be called "nougat," for it sounds much more exciting.
Deletealso, not a bad name for a pug.
DeleteAnd now I want a candy bar. Thanks.
Deletegross, rachel.
DeleteI'm not a dog person but I could be if his/her name was Nougat omg.
ReplyDeleteWhich is worse: pre-pregnant or pre-engaged?
ReplyDeletePre-pregnant, because then you spend all your time making a big deal about how you're not drinking and explaining that you're trying EVERY TIME YOU ARE EVER IN PUBLIC.
Deletepre engaged. for sure. because then you spend all your time creating creepy pinterest boards.
Deletewhat H.H. said about creepy pinterest boards.
Delete@HH dude, have you not seen the BABY BOARDS?
Delete@esb- yes. didn't even think about those. i stand corrected.
Deletewhat is creepier? trying on/buying wedding dresses "because it was a good deal!" (psh, ok), or trying on/buying maternity dresses? i say tie.
@HH I take great joy in unfollowing any board that ever includes a photo of a kid.
Deletenot that I hate kids, but they are not part of the life I think I'm meant to have.
you've pinned pictures of kids. i've repinned them from you. just sayin'.
Deletethat article is SO GOOD.
Deletei think that pre-engaged is worse... 'pre-pregnant' (or, um, trying to conceive??!) is not just a chance to "spend all your time making a big deal about how you're not drinking and explaining that you're trying EVERY TIME YOU ARE EVER IN PUBLIC".
DeleteWe didn't tell anyone that we were trying for a baby, and i know a few other people that have spent years trying and certainly haven't been telling everyone they know at every opportunity about it...
I guess maybe some people are like that (blasting it all around the place), but not all.
I'm going to guess that maybe bridesmaid/pre-pregnant doesn't want to tell the entire world that she's trying to conceive, and so is looking for a little guidance on what styles of dress to pick since bride is probably asking her to get it done.
ReplyDeletePrivacy is a cool thing, but telling her sisters that she has to hold off a bit on dress purchasing is not the same thing as telling the whole world!
DeleteBuying a dress doesn't make any sense because by April she could be 7 months pregnant, 2 months pregnant, or zero months pregnant, all of which result in drastically different dress needs.
but the bride and other bridesmaid are her sisters - hardly the 'entire world'
DeleteSomething like this Hatch Collection dress in fawn or sandalwood silk. (If only it weren't $150 above budget.) would work for varying degrees of pregnancy or otherwise.
ReplyDeleteOr a caftan. Obviously.
All the "pre-" this, "pre-" that tires me out. Live in the moment, man. Or something. Like the Shawshank guy said: get busy pre-dying or get busy actually dying. So.
or a
In December we picked out my bridesmaid dress for a March 10th wedding. By the wedding I was 15 weeks pregnant and it would NOT have fit if my wonderful mother-in-law hadn't added a panel in the back. It was a big hassel and I didn't know whether it would fit until I put it on the day of the wedding. (I kept getting bigger!) I say put off purchasing anything for as long as you can and go empire waist. Long is good with lots of flowy fabric in the skirt/tummy region. I can still wear a few of my empire waist dresses at 34 weeks but I have not gained a lot of extra weight. If you are really unlucky you may go up a size anyway. Also, don't forget *room in the chest*. You may (likely) gain 2 cup sizes!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I definitely understand not wanting to tell your sisters that you guys are trying. We would not have dreamed of telling our family that we were trying, though we did hint at it with some friends. Sometimes family members get excited about such things and forget to keep their mouths shut!
How is this a real question?? Seriously! Obviously you gotta wait to get the dang dress til you know what's up with your baby situation! Next, pleease!

ReplyDeleteshe hasn't said anything about being "pre-pregnant". Your words, not hers, guys. And i don't really think that trying to conceive a baby is in any way the same as being 'pre-engaged', but anyway...
ReplyDeleteShe is just saying that she and her husband are trying to conceive, and she is wondering if there is a good dress that she can get now that would work for either a non-pregnant, early-pregnant, or far-along-pregnant bridesmaid...
Maybe she wants to tick this thing off the list nice and early??
My two cents would be that you should wait because there is plenty of time to go before April 2013. With only two to arrange this shouldn't be a biggy (esp if you go for different styles, obv).
If you want to tick the dress of the list now for any reason, just go with an empire line or maxi dress. No drama. Good luck!!
How about you just don't wear the same dress as your sister. If you're 8 months pregnant and she's not, you won't look matching anyway.
ReplyDeletePregnant, pre-pregnant or whatever...check out ASOS when you're ready to buy your dress. Very cute stuff for those up the duff.
