I am set to get married this summer and I need help finding a dress!
My ideal dress would look something like this (which is unfortunately sold out) - fun and feminine but still formal enough for my parents.
The challenge is I am a 5 ft tall, 95 pounds, pint sized girl with a prepubescent boy's body. It's difficult to find a dress that I don't look buried in or that doesn't make me look awkward.

DeleteI love, love, love Twiggy because she put petite girls on the map during a time when curvy was all the rage. However, that little shift dress is going to make you look flat as a bean-pole. I would imagine you want to feel womanly and beautiful on your wedding day...not little girl-ish. I'm 5'1" and have b-cups, so I was in your same boat last year when I got married.
ReplyDeleteThis was my dress. It's a good example of what to look for to give the illusion of curves (ignore the weird little feather pin- it's removable.)
It has a natural waist, which I got tailored to be nice and snug, showing off my small waist and in turn bolstering up my boobies and making them look larger than they are (this dress is seriously good to your rack!! But not in a gross-too-much-cleavage way). The skirt is full/a-line but not POUFY and not TOO full. You won't drown in fabric. It was easy to dance in and walk around in all day/night (my wedding was outside).
Being tiny, I was worried that lots of fabric would overwhelm my frame, and lots of "bling" would be distracting. This dress was perfect- made me feel like a bride without stealing the show. Look for something with this shape and you will feel beautiful!! Good luck!
Since there seems to be some doubt that petite women can wear full skirts and cinched waists, here's a profile shot of me in my wedding dress. Someone was holding up my train so the skirt looks a little fuller than it really was. A-line is definitely the silhouette to go with if you want to maximize your (lack of) curves.

DeleteI don't know if your wedding is early summer or late summer, but you may be at the point of buying off the rack only. Many of the dresses that others have posted are custom-made only (three month+ lead time), so take that into consideration for your search. Good Luck!
I ADORE that Ann Taylor dress, and have been lusting after it for a few weeks. The 30% off, however, does not apply to full-price wedding dresses. Sad.

ReplyDeleteRegular size dresses (not petite-size) do tend to always look a little out of proportion on a smaller/shorter frame. No matter how much it is altered, it always seems a bit off. You may still have time to have a custom dress made to your exact measurements, so it actually looks in proportion. I was happy with the custom work of these guys, who actually were less expensive/faster than most boutiques. They have a great selection of shorter dress styles that can help define a "shape" for you (your choice of fabric):

ReplyDeleteI second ESB's shift dress approach. I think the cinched waist is something that looks great on "every" body (which is why I wore one when I got married). But YOU have a body that can get away with those silhouettes that only work on skinny models! Why not take advance of that? I would.

DeleteMMMHHMM. Cinched waist + flared (short) dress is going to have to be exactly exactly right. I'm not sure I'm 100% sold on Audrey Hepburn and if she can't do it, I don't know who can.
DeleteAlso: depending on the kind of straight-line body you have, cinched waist can end up making you look like you're in drag. Twiggy all the way.
I think if you are worried about your silouhette being over-powered a sinched waist and full skirt is the exact wrong choice. Love ESBs suggestion.

DeleteI like ESB's pick but in case you had your heart set on something more fitted, Leanne Marshal has some great dresses in her etsy shop. These two are my favorite. She says she can do some small customizations, like maybe make all the tulle one length on the first, and shorten the sleeves on the second to make it a bit more modern. If you're near LA or NYC, get thee to a Lovely Bride Salon! I'm sure you'll find something great.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was tiny enough to wear this dress by Dahl by Alison Kelly. So delicate and pretty ... maybe a little too "precious" for someone with a young body but feminine nonetheless. Something different than the other suggestions though, and I think it gives the beanpole model some shape.
