Makeup advice pleez

Hi ESB,

I am getting married in Oct. of this year and I pretty well have everything taken care of venue, dress etc., my only problem seems to be make-up.

I grew up as a tomboy I am still a tomboy, luckily for me my FH does not mind; however, it is my wedding day and I would like to rock it, go all out, so he can say 'damn, she is all mine'. I do wear make-up occasionally but it only consists of mascara and lip gloss (not very glam), I have tried eyeliner but no matter what kind I use it rubs off or runs away or disappears, I'm not quite sure what it does, but I will put it on and within an hour that shit is gone, totally irritating.

So my question is do any of your readers have any suggestions as which brands to buy and best techniques to apply for eyeliner, mascara, blush, eyeshadow… everything? I guess I should say there will be no bridal salon or make-up pro for me, it will be me doing it myself or my sister.

Thanks for any and all advice you guys throw my way.

I did just buy this $12 jumbo liner from Sephora, which I'm quite pleased with. It's supposed to be smudgy, so it's pretty much impossible to mess up.

But who's got more helpful hints about WEDDING MAKEUP?

  1. Eyeliner specific: I use (not everyday) Laura Mercier cake eyeliner and it's pretty solid. You put a bit of water in your hand, get the brush wet and then get product on it. Then you just kind of push it into a line, above and below the lashline (top lashes not bottom!).

One of my few wedding splurges was going into Nordstrom, sitting down with a Laura Mercier consultant, having her show me how to do makeup for my wedding (all free) and buying a shit ton of it (splurge).*

Generally, your face/foundation is the most important part. Then mascara and lip and cheek color. I use eyeliner instead of eyeshadow but it's all sort of what looks good on your face.

I'd recommend going into a dept. store and having them help you. They might pressure you to buy everything but you don't have to (I'd typically buy at least one thing as "payment" for their time).

    * I've always worn makeup but often crap-o drugstore stuff. I wanted to both re-invest in make-up and get tips for heavier application for photos.

  2. Ditto Hillary. I went to Sephora and had them show me what to do and then I bought a few key things. I love the brand Make Up Forever, especially their Mat Velvet foundation.

  3. I find liquid eyeliner stays put where pencils tend to rub off. Even if I smudge/wear off all my eyeshadow at the end of the day the liquid eyeliner is still there. I just use drug store brands and it only takes a little practice to get it right...and I'm not ashamed to admit I watch youtube makeup tutorials for techniques.

  4. There was a lot of hype surrounding the Naked Palette by Urban Decay a few months back. (They have since come out with a Naked2.) It's a good investment. There are a lot of colors, they're mostly pretty neutral and are a mixture of both matte or shimmer, so you can easily dress up or dress down the makeup. It comes with a brush and some primer potion, which is absolutely perfect for keeping your eyeshadow/eyeliner from rubbing off. The product photo on the website doesn't do it justice. I definitely recommend going to Sephora/Ulta/wherever and looking at it in person.

  5. I had my makeup done at MAC once, and I don't know what kind of eyeliner they used (it had to be a gel or a cream or something), but it stayed put for HOURS. It might be worth it to go to Sephora or MAC or any department store and have your makeup done professionally, then purchase any products you end up liking. (I know MAC charges about $60, but the money goes toward products, so at least you walk away with something besides a pretty face.) Just make sure to tell them you don't want a heavy face of makeup (unless you really do want to go all out). That way you'll not only have the products, but someone will have shown you how to use them to get the look you want.

    1. For MAC you have to buy $50 of makeup after. Just buy what they put on you to use later... I've done it about 4 times at MAC & been happy every single time. Other makeup counters were totally hit & miss w/ me (1 time I said thank you & literally booked it to the bathroom to wash off the blue eye shadow up to my eyebrow the woman put on me).
Make an appointment though, they fill up SO quickly-- apparently teens love to do this before school dances. ;-p

  6. i'd back up the laura mercier stuff, they spent ages teaching me, and often they have little collections for a special price which was perfect for me as I don't wear makeup enough to use up full size products. Laura Mercier brushes are great tools, and the ones in my little kit were just the same as their full size, but with a shorter handle. I felt confident, elegant, and mostly that i looked like myself on the day, and that was me doing it myself with very little practice - they were that good at teaching me.. also, they weren't overly pushy to buy everything i tried, they understood i had a budget to stick to.. good luck!

  7. The MAC eyeliner that stays forever comes in a pot, it's called Fluidline. I am also a makeup know-nothing, so for my wedding 2 of my bridesmaids took me to MAC, they paid Very Close Attention as the woman did me up, we paid for about $100 worth of products (you need to buy at least $55 to get the consult, I think), and then we practiced recreating it a few times before the day.
The crazy thing? I still use it all, almost every day. Once you get the hang of putting the eyeliner on it gets super easy and stays on for DAYS if you don't wash it off. Highly recommend MAC for this. Just pick a consultant whose makeup isn't too off the wall.

  8. I don't know much about makeup either (so, um, maybe my advice isn't worth crap) so for my wedding, I decided I needed to keep it pretty streamlined in order to avoid looking like a clown. Along those lines, I heartily recommend Smashbox O-Glow for blush because you'll look totally fresh-faced and it's hard to mess us since you just smear it on till it looks good. Likewise, lipstick always wears off and stains dry out my lips so I just made the hubster carry Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment and reapplied as I wanted to. The plum color gave me exactly the "sexy" factor I was looking for. On that note, if you have the $ in the budget, lash extensions were AWESOME because I didn't really have to do anything else with my eyes and they looked fab. Seriously, everybody commented on them.

  9. As a tom-boy myself, I have struggled with all of that myself. Here is a link to a great blog that goes over make up application, hair styling and everything step-by-step. Even provides product listings to help you choose products. Hope this helps you out. It has been very helpful and informative for me.

  10. If you're not apple to visit a makeup store or department store for a consultation, here are some suggestions. Make Up For Ever has amazing makeup for brides. It is super long lasting and they have many waterproof products. I'd recommend first applying HD Foundation for a flawless complexion. Use HD concealer under eyes and on any trouble spots. Make sure you set your foundation/concealer with a matte powder to avoid shine and make it last longer. All the Make Up For Ever HD products do wonders for looking perfect on camera. Apply a neutral bone tone eye shadow all over your lids (perhaps with a little shimmer) and then a taupe color just in your crease. Apply Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes liner (super waterproof) along your upper and lower lash line (pull the corner of your eye to create a tight smooth surface to apply the liner). I'd recommend brown for a natural look (or black if you want to go bolder). Curl your lashes and then apply two coats of MUFE Waterproof Smokey Lash in black. Apply blush in a soft peach to the apples of your cheeks. I personally think a little gloss is nice for the lips, this way you don't leave anything on your now husband after the big kiss. If you want a bolder color for the reception, go for it. Good luck and have fun....just make sure you practice a few times before the big day!

  11. I use CoverGirl Outlast Lipcolor (note, not lipstain) and it generally lasts from 7am application until 3pm snackbreak. You have to make sure to follow the instructions on the package (apply to clean, dry lips -no chapstick- and allow the color to set for a full minute before adding the gloss) but it's pretty magical. My best advise is to find someplace that will allow you to try out the colors before you buy to make sure it's what you want (Both shades I purchased were much more intense than I expected) and practice using it for at least a week since you kind of have to get it right on the first application. You can remove it with vaseline or make-up remover but it won't hold as well on the second application.

  12. I'm a huge fan of Urban Decay eyeshadow primer. It's kinda pricey, but it seriously keeps your eye makeup from smudging. If you're not prone to breakouts, Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer looks really pretty and natural (at least, it does on my skin). If you are prone to breakouts, you might try the oil-free tinted moistureizer (but I've only tried the regular tinted moisturizer, so I can't vouch for the oil-free stuff).

    1. I use the oil-free tinted moisturizer and I LOVE it. It looks super natural, smooths out some of my pore imperfections and gives me a litle glow. I did like the regular a little bit better (it goes on smoother) but it made me breakout when I used it every day.

  13. I think you should just go with your normal makeup. If you're not great at stuff beyond mascara and lipgloss, what about your wedding day will improve that? There's no rule that says you have to wear a full face of makeup just because it's your wedding.

  15. For your eyes, what you need is Two Faced Shadow Insurance, the most amazing eye make-up primer in the world. It will help your make-up stay on for like HOURS. I will be using it for my upcoming wedding, along with Two Faced eye shadow and eyeliner.

I love MAC but find them really pricey (esp. when buying a lot of product) so I am going to Sephora to do a wedding prep with them and buying make-up there. They can help you look as gorgeous as you want to without caking your face to death. Whatever you end up doing, good luck!

  16. Seeing as you're not into makeup normally, it might actually work out better to hire a good makeup artist?

That said, I am a lover of the makeups, and for reviews http://www.makeupalley.com is a good site.

The enemy of the photos is greasy skin, so if you tend to this stuff like a shine control primer (not too much) and a dusting of powder is a good idea. Other than that, a good well-colour-matched foundation, well-blended in (Chanel), a smidge of cream blush blended up from the apple of you cheek (Bobbi Brown, a peachy/nude shade), well-shaped eyebrows, a swipe of eyeliner and (waterproof, obv) black mascara and you'll be good to go.

  17. I second all of the advice to go to a makeup counter for tips just make sure to let them know that you want to look very natural and not too heavy. Those girls at the counters can really cake it on sometimes. The most important thing for your wedding day is a primer. You need a proper primer/moisturizer to go under your makeup (and one for your eyelids since you're worried about loosing definition in your eyeliner). With such a long day and so much moving around nothing will stay on your face the entire time unless you prep it first. Any makeup counter you go to will give you good advice on what to use.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just want to add support for the brand Make Up For Ever. I first came across them when they weren't very widely known -- precocious yet not-loaded New Yorker that I was, I went to Barney's to find someone at one of the counters to do my makeup for my prom (in 1996). I bought the lipstick and gave the woman $20, I think. Anyway, the point is, the makeup lasted ALL NIGHT. Like I looked exactly the same in the pictures from the beach at sunrise as I did in the leaving-the-house pics.

Ever since, I have been hooked on MUFE and highly recommend them.

In answer to the bigger question, I would first suggest what others have about going to a Sephora or dept store to get tips. But if that isn't possible, then the best thing is probably to look for a magazine (InStyle maybe?) or website that has info about what colors work best for which skin/hair/etc, those pieces will usually have pictures so you can see what you like, then see what the products are ... then just practice until you're happy with the results.

The secret trick of those people you see where you're like "wow, her makeup looks good, how did she do that?" is trial and error.

  19. Watching makeup tutorials on Youtube might help.

Putting on primer before applying the makeup and putting on powder after applying it might help it from smudging.

If after a few trial runs with eyeliner, it’s still smudgy, try just using eye shadow and lots of waterproof black mascara. Keep the eye shadow color neutral and keep it only on the lid of the eye (don’t go above the crease). A bit of a light shimmer especially in the inside corner of the eyes (the sides by your nose) can brighten the look. Perhaps: Cover Girl eye shadow in Tapestry Taupe and Cover Girl Lashblast Volume Blasting Mascara.

For lips, using a lip liner can keep the makeup on longer and with less smudging. The trick, though, is to not just outline your lips but use the liner to fill in the color of your lips. Wiggle your lips around to fill in any creases. For a matte look, keep it like that; for a shiny look, add your favorite lip gloss on top.

I think even the cheapo 99c lip liners at the drugstore work just fine.

  20. Ditto to what everyone else has said above about makeup counters, telling them to keep it light, natural, fresh and not caking on the stuff (note MAC Counter girls are SUPPOSED to cake on as much product as possible on themselves to help sell product...hence why I always think they're intimidating makeup glamazons who'll laugh at me).

but if, like myself, you're not a lipstick person have a look at Burt's Bees Lip Balm ... they have a Cranberry coloured one that I swear by for giving my lips a bit of colour.

Definitely do something with your eyes that'll make them pop, since you want him staring deep into yours when you exchange vows...well at least I'd want my guy to be doing that.

  21. Oh man, I was in your exact same boat for my wedding. My advice is PRACTICE!! Have a friend or family member over who is good at doing her own makeup to help you, but do it yourself so you learn what works and what doesn't. You can wipe it off and try again as many times as it takes until you get the look you want.

Waterproof liner and mascara for the big day is a must. You must have extra water-y water-lines (the line of skin between your lashes and your actual eyeball) and that's why your liner vanishes- it's getting eaten by your eye. Go to Sephora's online store and read customer reviews for liners and don't buy anything that has a review that says, "didn't last all day."

Lastly, give yourself more time to get ready on your wedding day than you think you need. I was a little rushed because my hair took longer than I thought it would, and my makeup job was not exactly how I wanted it as a result because I didn't have enough time to do it perfectly. Make sure you have tiiiiiiime to relax and do it as slowly as you need to in order to get it how you want.

All of that being said, your husband loves you the way you are naturally- clearly!! And that is a wonderful thing. Don't clown yourself up to unrecognizable proportions! Keep it somewhat natural and "you". Enhance your features, but don't take it so far that people notice the makeup before they notice you!

  22. Everyone here has given you great advice already.

Some of my favorite brands have already been mentioned, they will all last for hours on your wedding day and will look fantastic in the photographs:
    MakeUp Forever
    Nars
    MAC
    Laura Mercier
Bobby Brown (which I don't think has been mentioned and is the perfect natural looking effect you'd want)

Most importantly, you want to look like you but only a little more fabulous. Foundation will be oh so very important because you will photograph better.

Go to your department store makeup counter and when you ask for advice ask them if they will actually do your makeup on your wedding day. Usually you will have to agree to buy about $50 or so in product which is really a small investment AND you walk away with some goodies to keep.

Also, my family member works in a MAC store but also does freelance. Ask your department store person if they do makeup on the side (many of them often do) it may not be as expensive as you think.

OR....ask the person doing your hair if they also do make-up. My stylist does...

OR....ask one of your glam friends if she would be willing to help you out on your wedding day by applying makeup for you and do a trial run to make sure you are comfortable with it.

  23. I bought Laura Mercier Eye Basics, which is a primer for your eyes. And trust me - it works. Even using makeup remover, this stuff clings to your eye makeup. For my face, I used Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, which really seemed to help keep my powder foundation in place.

I do not generally like having makeup artists touch me. I inevitably end up walking away feeling like a streetwalker. So I ruled out having someone else do my makeup very early and instead decided to practice, a lot, with the makeup I had and with some makeup I purchased specially, once I decided the look that I wanted. I also had two good girl friends who were very good with makeup come over the week before and help me decide on lip colors, eye makeup style (I went with a smoky purple), and other decisions. One of them loaned me a bronzer/highlighter which really did make a difference in giving my cheeks a little color and making my face not look washed out. My other friend brought her professional camera and took some photos of me in my makeup and a white shirt so we could decide how my face was coming out in photos. That may help you judge whether you're feeling shiny and will need more powder or less eye makeup or more lip color, etc.

In the end, I don't regret for a second doing my own makeup. I felt like myself, I looked great, and I loved the day and my photos. Good luck!

  24. Purchasing all new makeup--even at the drugstore--is going to coast you about what it will cost to get your makeup done at a local salon or spa. Especially if you're basically starting from scratch and have next to no products to begin with.

Why don't you do call a few salons or spas in your area and see what they charge? DO NOT tell them it's for your wedding (they automatically jack up the price for brides. Pick one and then show up day of and tell them you have a fancy party to go to that evening and just want to jazz up your look.

    Have fun and good luck!!

  25. Last comments on this post, I swear (I really like makeup):

    - in Martha wedding mags there's always makeup tips/advice. The most recent one* had, like, 3 different looks (one with lip emphasis, one with eye, one with skin). All were very clean and subdued.

    - I don't like people touching my face, either (like, Anon 8:56 #1). I generally assume people have bad taste or will do a bad job. That said, I did not hire a makeup artist (as Anon 8:56 #2 suggests) b/c I got married at a camp in the woods not near any major/cool town. I'm CERTAINLY not going to trust some girl doing makeup in the backwoods of Michigan. It just wasn't practical for me - as it may not be for this bride.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Just a little tip coming from a make up artist :)--salons/artists do not purposely "jack up prices" because you are a bride (OK, maybe some places do!). Bridal appointments usually take more time, energy, products etc than other appointments (not to say one is more important than the other). It's best to be straight up and honest with the artist so she can use the right products (ex you dont want to use sunscreen/spf products because it will leave a white cast in photos etc). Judging from your daily routine, it seems like you won't need too much, so if you decide to go the artist route they won't charge you obscene amounts of money....

The makeup counter is a great idea as well. I used to counter at Bobbi Brown and would do a lot of brides...they do recommend 3 products (which you choose and will have for awhile!) and I would do a day of make up for the Bride usually as a service or she would buy a lip gloss (there's no rule that you have to buy something...but it would be nice to support the artist!!).

    Congrats, and enjoy!

  27. On a normal day, I usually only wear mascara. For my recent wedding, I got the foundation kit from Bare Escentuals, and eyeliner stick, and some eye shadow. I also use a MAC eyeshadow base to help everything stay on my lids all day. I loved the Bare Escentuals makeup as it's only powder (no pore clogging liquid foundation), lasted all day, and didn't feel like I was wearing makeup because it's so light. I got several compliments on my makeup, and I did it myself in fifteen minutes.

  29. Blinc mascara!!!! Best shit ever. It isn't clumpy and gross and it's totally tear and eye-rubbing proof. Basically it makes little tubes around your eyelashes and only comes off with warm water and friction. I don't spend money on makeup ever, (<3 $3 eye shadow!) but I spend $20 for a tube of this.

  30. I'm going to echo other posters, and say PRACTICE. I was in a similar boat - didn't wear a lot of makeup, but wanted to look awesome on my wedding day. I could afford to either pay a make up artist, or buy nice make up and do it myself. I bought nice make up about 5 months before the wedding, and played with it regularly. Not that you need that much time, but I was definitely comfortable doing my make up by the time the wedding came along. Also, I looked awesome. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. FYI, the perfect shade of red-organge lipstick is MAC's "So Chaud."

    ReplyDelete
  32. SAMPLES! If you aren't planning on using it past the wedding, don't buy a ton of make up.

Sephora and Nordstrom will both give generous samples. Ask for primer, light foundation, illuminator and cream blush. Purchase your own mascara or false eyelashes and eyeliner, if you want it, so that the salesperson gets a little commission for their trouble.

Does your sister do make up? If so, she should be able to help you. If not, think about asking one of your lady friends who is good with make up to get ready with you and help out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great advice from everyone above. One thing I'd like to throw in is that it really helps to have a good set of brushes. If you think you're terrible at applying make-up it could be because you're trying to put it on with that tiny padded stick that came with it. I have a set of Sonia Kashuk brushes that I bought at Target YEARS ago. They've really held up over time. Just make sure that you wash them in cold water every once in a while.

I also highly recommend Laura Mercier's
Undercover Pot, it's great for both blemishes and for under (or in my case corner) eye darkness. It also has a very fine setting powder that keeps the stuff on. It allows you to wear a pretty sheer and natural looking foundation because you can just cover any problem spots that pop up from pre-wedding stress.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Why are you against hiring a professional? After you buy all the products that you'll presumably never use again, you'll spend the same amount of money plus all the stress of trying to learn something new for the sake of your wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hello all you lovely ladies, thanks for all the awesome advice, you all have been a great help!!!!!

  36. eye makeup primer will change your life. without I'm eye-makeupless in ~3 hours, with it I can easily last 15. I use Bare Escentuals' "Prime Time" - but most makeup companies make one these days.

also - make sure to test EVERYTHING you wear out well beforehand. I know tons of people who have ended up being allergic to various make up products over the years - not something to deal with at your wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I want to chime and and say that it really helps to choose makeup lines based on how well they do for your coloring over all. For example, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown do well with yellow-undertone skins. Chanel, Nars, and Giorgi Armani do well with blue-undertone skins. Also make sure not to use a foundation with SPF. The light will kind of bounce off it.

    1. That is really good advice, and nicely observed about the brands!

If you have blue undertones in your skin then wearing foundation etc with yellow undertones will make you look un-like yourself (and vice versa), and will hide your natural glow.

    2. Makeup Forever! Really - the name does not lie. The stuff will stay on ALL day.

  38. I'd ditto the Bare Minerals recommendations above - it's easy to keep it looking natural. Also, I get these "Lid and Line" 3-in-1 pencils by Pixi at Target - they make adding some more emphasis to the eye easy and less risky.

  39. first of all, i did my own make up and IT WAS FINE. musts: fake eyelashes, primer (smashbox is my go-to. this is good item to ask for samples...), blush/ bronzer, powder foundation (bare minerals like ppl mentioned or urban decay has a good one), whatever will keep your eyebrows in check, eyeliner (makeup forever has a GOOD waterproof eyeliner gel that you apply with a thin brush. it gives your lids a little lift without pulling the disappearing act), gloss/ lipstick.

i would say do 1 or 2 practice runs with all the makeup so you know how you want it to look when you do it yourself. also, the counter folk at any dept store or sephora are more than willing to try things out on you or show you techniques -- i was just going to do my own thing but learned a thing or two from the goddesses at sephora and it turned out even better than i could've imagined. don't be afraid to ask.

  40. Hi there! I'm a makeup artist and I've got a few general tips for you. Firstly, I don't know your skin type & issues (dry, combo, oily, red, acne scars, dark under-eyes, etc) but as you are lower maintenance, I just want to help steer you away from a few things. Someone advised you to get a Naked Palette- if you want a shimmery eye look, then yes, its a very versatile palette that you can create a thousand looks from and its very cost effective. However, if you don't want shimmer, especially with flash photography (which has a tendency to highten everything's effect) then go with matte shadows. You can still get light colors and put a pearlescent sheen (highlighter) in the inner corners of your eyes and the tops of your cheekbones for glow, but this way your face doesn't compete against itself. Also, don't wear a red lip. You'll be so over attempting to maintain it, keeping your teeth clean, worrying about pictures, it's not worth it unless you're really into makeup. Get false lashes. Either have them professionally applied (a lot of hairstylists will do this, so if you're getting your hair done, ask if your stylist can apply your lashes too) You'll never regret how big and beautiful and flirty your eyes will look. Prime everything, avoid silicone-based primers if you've got acne-prone skin. DO NOT use the Make Up For Ever HD Setting Powder. It is 100% silica, which photographs white. If you set your skin with this, you'll look like you've got mental problems. Seriously. Every celebrity who had white blotches on their skin at some step-and-repeat had this on their skin. Get a skin-colored setting powder. Chanel makes a great one. I really recommend hiring a makeup artist (if you don't know where to start, go to a makeup counter at Nordstrom or sephora and ask the person you think looks the best how they did what they did and/or if they do makeup on the side. A ton of them do.) A makeup artist has access to pro products, knows what to avoid, how to make you look like the best you possible, and the money you spend on the artist is worth it compared to all this makeup you'll never wear.

    Hope that helps and congratulations!

  41. Almay 16-hour eyeliner! It's a drugstore steal and it lasts all day long, no smudging. All my other products are much more expensive Smashbox, Laura Mercier and Makeup Forever goods, but this Almay eyeliner seriously can't be beat.

  42. i'd also recommend starting to wear more makeup at home/during the day/etc. so that you and your fiance get used to it! (and, so you get time to practice!)

it sometimes takes my guy a few times to get used to bright new lipstick colors, etc. so if you want to go all out, you want him to be prepared/ready for that if it's not your usual style. i've also realized that there are certain things that my fiance likes more than others... he's cool with lipstick, anti super dark eye make up. usually i don't care and do what i want, but, like you, i want him to be wowed on our wedding day, so it's helpful to know what he likes!

  43. I think it's been mentioned, but the most important thing for setting eye-liner is powder! And, yes, do not use Make Up For Ever powder, it photographs white. Do use a mineral powder. Take a brush, dip it in the powder, dab it on the eye-liner, and then dust off the excess. Definitely practice before the big day.

  44. I know it's been said, but I just want to emphasize - primer will make a world of difference! I currently don't use foundation/face primer, but I heard the primers from Smashbox are the shit: Smashbox

And I DO use Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion and it's unbelievable. Everyday prior to using it, I'd come home from work with mascara under my eyes and eyeshadow in the creases. Now, my eye makeup literally does not budge through a workday AND a post-work trip to the gym (gross, but true). Urban Decay

Benefit stays on all day, too, and looks very classic: Benetint

    Good luck!
