Hi ESB!
My fiance and I are having our reception in our neighborhood Irish pub. We are trying to make personalized pint glass favors part of our centerpieces. Any ideas?
Flowers seem out of place in an Irish pub and ribbon makes me think of New Year's Eve.

I'm thinking you put a pint glass sort of like just above the knife at each place setting? (See chart above)
AND THEN YOU POUR BEER IN IT.
You should etch them. http://www.elledecor.com/decorating/articles/diy_glass_etching
ReplyDeleteare you going to have them screen printed with your names and the date of the wedding ? i suppose so. i must confess that we NEVER, EVER save those 'keepsakes' -- i find them tacky. rather, i'd spend the money on GOOD BEER to put in the pint glasses.
ReplyDeletetotally agree with 17 beats...why would anyone want anything with other peoples names on them?
ReplyDeleteThat is kind, but I really don't want a favor. I just want to eat, drink, and party with you.
ReplyDeleteHow about candle centerpieces for the pub.
funny, I was just looking at this and was thinking it would be perfect for the pub wedding...or anything, really...
DeleteYes, these are great ideas!!
DeleteI never understood the concept of having one personalized pint glass. Pint glasses are best in fours.
ReplyDeleteWe are not having favors either. Um, who wants to carry around a trinket to the bars post-reception anyway?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, ESB, I really love your new tag "sometimes I srsly think you guys are fucking with me". Classic.
One wedding I went to did a shot instead of the champagne toast (fun side note: the bride was pregnant and her "vodka" was actually water). They had their names and date on the shot glasses, and gave them as favors. I thought it was cute. Don't think I'd feel similarly about a pint glass, for whatever reason. Can't exactly put it in your purse when you leave. Or maybe it's that people tend have an amalgamation of shot glasses they've collected over the years and that was just one more.
ReplyDeleteIf y'all are beer-lovers, using pint glasses as part of your centerpieces is a nice idea. But I wouldn't give them as favors. I'd say 98% of wedding favors are useless and a waste of money. The shot glass is the only one I've ever kept.
I don't think I'd understand it was a party favor if it was incorporated into the centerpieces. I'm not accustomed to stealing bits of decoration (but I steal pint glasses like nobody's business)
ReplyDeleteMy best friend is doing pint glass favors at her reception and I'm super excited for mine. I love pint glasses and mugs and kitschy memorabilia stuff like that, though apparently I'm the only one.
ReplyDeleteIf they're personalized with the names of your guests (rather than your own names), maybe you could use them as the "place cards" instead of the centerpieces.
ReplyDeleteSet out rows of them at the entrance to the reception hall and inside each personalized glass, stick a piece of paper with the table number on it.
A. ESB is right about what to do with these glasses.
ReplyDeleteB. Just do you. They are what you want, and what you want to pay for, so enjoy the fuck out of them.
C. The candle pictures Emily Greene posted are A+.
Yeah, I like candle centerpieces - like Emily posted or like this.
ReplyDeleteI think pint glasses are a fine favor if they are done well. I'm not a huge fan of favors in general but pint glasses seem less terrible than some other idea. This couple did a good job with them (about 1/4 down the page).
I meant to say somewhere that having the pint glasses be the centerpieces is a terrible idea. I don't think it'd look that good and nikki is right. I think using them as placecards as liz mentioned is a good idea.
DeleteThe pint glasses in Hillary's link (above) look awesome and yes...for the love of all things good and sane don't put Matthew Hearts Lisa for Eternity (insert own names) with the date scrolled across it in 30pt font. You'll end up seeing them at every thrift shop around or have piles of "forgotten" favours at the end of the night.
Deleteoh man, can you imagine being in a thrift shop and finding your PERSONALIZED WEDDING GLASSES?!
DeleteI, personally, don't ever keep personalized favors. And I see that a lot of the other commenters are the same way.
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER, I will point out that there are clearly many, many people who feel differently. There are people who go nuts over the free glasses you get when you go wine tasting and people who love getting mugs or pint glasses at weddings. This audience may not be a representative sample. If you love the pint glasses (or if you've already ordered them) go for it.
re: centerpieces - I have to agree with all the people who suggested candles. Anything too complicated would look out of place in a pub, I think.
Thanks for the feedback and ideas. People have addressed a lot of my doubts and concerns. I like the candle ideas, i'll have to see if that is allowed/works at the pub. I have a lot of thinking to do...
ReplyDeleteMy sister's wedding venue doesn't allow real candles, she found some dollar store battery powered tea lights that when put in frosted glass look exactly like the real thing. We were really surprised that the colour and flicker were bang on.
DeleteMany venues let you have real candles as long as they are self-contained (like the pillars in Emily's link wouldn't be allowed b/c they aren't in glass, but the ones I shared would be).
Deleteyes true. any places with gas-lamps won't let any flames
DeleteIf it's in a pub and you want personalized pint glasses, why not just two do that say your names on them or whatever? Because, and I'm not trying to be mean I'm just being brutally honest, the only people who are going to care about personalized pint glasses in 5 years for your wedding are you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteThis post exemplifies why this blog is the best. ESB gets to let her hilarious style and true opinions fly, she cracks us all up in the process, and then the readership contribute really helpful ideas for the person who wrote in. It's a WIN-WIN-WIN. I love it!
ReplyDeleteARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT MY IDEA WASN'T HELPFUL????
Deletehaaaaa, no it was one of the best ones!! i printed out your chart for my future reference!
DeleteI think personalized glasses could be nice but NOT with names oder the date on it. How about a (song) quote that means something for you? Maybe even 2-3 different ones?
ReplyDeletePlease no. Nearly everyone will not want it and they will feel bad when they throw it away.
