business in front, party at the back

Hello to my Snarky Sister,

I am getting married in October to the artistically minded scientist I've been searching for. And found the MOST AMAZING Escada wedding dress which is completely modest in the front, but is backless. As in almost butt crack backless with beaded straps. For 85% off no less on the internet. Oh and there's a bow which snaps onto the butt area. I thought I would hate the bow, but once the aforementioned fiance took some pics of the back, with and without the bow, this minimalist woman actually decided to go with the bow.

We're having a VERY short ceremony, hopefully outside and with a mention of the Higgs boson particle and dueling accordions.

My question is this: what kind of shrug would work? All the weddingy sweaters/jackets/wraps are cropped bolero looking things and that WILL NOT WORK with the whole almost butt crack dress, but anything long will look strange with the bow.

Can you think of anything amazing-like or do I just suck it up and be cold for the sake of my fucking gorgeous backless bowed dress? (it's floor-length - I know you hate tights but how do you feel about long underwear?)

Because it's a large it hangs down a bit lower on me.

suck it up for the ceremony. you'll be so giddy to be getting married, you won't notice the cold.

and then throw on a dressy full-length coat of some sort to make your getaway. (snapping off the bow if you need to.)

but first things first, lady. GET THAT BUTT CRACK TO A TAILOR.

Especially since you got it at such a discount! No reason not to spend $$$ on an expert tailor gig.

  3. not sure how the colors would work out, but if you really feel strongly about having something over the dress, something like this could work.

seeing as i strongly agree about paying up for a tailor, maybe that same tailor could make something like the lanvin above for a fraction of the price.

    1. Am in a similar low-backed dress/potentially cold weather situation - I LOVE this cashmere shrug, just not the price tag - does anyone have suggestions of cheap (not necessarily white) alternatives?

  4. I think ESB is right about not feeling the cold...I certainly didn't during our outdoor fall wedding (temps were lower than expected). That being said, I think a cape like this or this would be really classy, warm, and would allow just a *peek* at that fabulous backless-ness you have going on.

And for the get-a-way, one of these fabulous long coats:

    Black velvet
    PURPLE!
    Burgundy lambswool (warm!)
    Another black velvet beauty

    1. Oop. The burgundy lambswool link didn't work the first time. And I forgot this one. And also, will some bride please wear this over their dress??

  5. omg is burgundy spelled burgandy?? or is the etsy seller wrong? i'm never commenting before coffee ever again.

  6. Um, she wore a wrap and totally knocked it out the park. Exactly where @Tonia was headed.

  7. Please get your dress tailored. Really, no one wants to see your butt crack.

I think a fur wrap (faux or real) would be darling with your dress. Your dress definitely needs a little more luxury than a shrug.

  8. NO FUR, jesus. esb, i expected more of you.

  9. @lauren get off your soapbox, please and thank you. besides isn't fur A-OK in vegan-land as long as it's vintage and bought from a charity shop

  10. not a chance, baby. i'm nowhere near vegan-land, and i don't give a shit how old a fur is or where it's been; if it's not swaddling an orphaned cub, it's on the wrong animal.

    4. i'm vegetarian, cookies, and i live on the far outskirts of the LES; just using my building's elevator is like freebasing brisket.

  11. i got married outside on the windiest 55 degree october day in NY state's history. my dress was also backless. the guests might have been freezing but it could have been a blizzard and i wouldn't have noticed. i got a jazzy yellow sweater for the outdoor after party. here's some photos that may help: http://ohdarlingphotography.com/blog/
    good luck and enjoy!

  12. Lauren - if you eat meat you should avoid disparaging people for wearing fur.

    2. I assumed when she said she didn't live anywhere near vegan land she was referring to the fact that she ate animal products.

Regardless - I like the fur. I live in MN - it's fucking cold here. I wear a fur of my gram's when it gets way too cold for overpriced northface.

I think it's easier to hate fur in California.

    3. nope, i was saying i'm just a vegetarian. i live in new york, which is plenty cold.

    4. well, to be fair now, it doesn't usually get -50 in NY, does it? it does in MN. it was -30 in duluth just last week.

anon 2:58, i'm in WI and i have a fur of my gram's too. it's so warm in the winter and way dressier than my regular puffy/ugly winter coat. plus it reminds me of her. :) the way i see it, that animal didn't die in vain because that coat is very loved and well used by several generations. i'm not like advocating fur coats here, but i don't think there's anything wrong with re-purposing a vintage one.

  13. Thanks for your advice everyone :) And believe me I am getting that butt crack tailored!

  14. ok, can't help but weigh in on the fur issue... wearing fur and looking hot IS advocating fur. Whether or not you admit it, you are condoning it as fashionable. I'm not above it, I wear leather, I recognize that I'm wearing dead cow... and I think about it every time I see an adorable leather jacket. Fur feels glamourous, is cozy, can be vintage etc. But as long as we keep wearing fur and looking awesome in it, people are gonna keep buying new ones and those purchases may or may not be ethical depending on your definition. You don't have to be a vegetarian or a vegan to care about this issue. Even if you don't cut fur out of your fashion diet, it won't hurt to draw your awareness to it, and to the awesome alternatives out there.

    1. This is a really good point. I wasn't thinking about it that way, but you're totally right- wearing fur and looking hot *does* advocate it.

It's tough, though...There is such a strong fur trapping/trading history in the upper midwest (the voyageurs and all), so it's more or less a part of the culture to wear leather mukluks and shearling coats in the winter. I know several people who tan their own deer hides and wear mocs and coats made out of it.

I have to wonder if that approach is less ethical than wearing synthetic alternatives that are made in huge factories with chemicals and child labor overseas, ya know? Interesting discussion.

  15. OH GOD NOT THE FUR DEBATE IT'S SO BORING I WANT TO DIE. I liked the butt crack issue better, mostly because I thought I was witnessing some kind of late breaking bridal trend of epic bad taste. More butt cracks, fewer succulent bouquets is what I always say.

    1. Ha!

Also, I thought Lauren's comment was about fur being ugly and/or gross, not about vegan moralism.

  16. oh, it's ugly and gross also, anon.

i'd feel your pain, WPM, but this talk SHOULD kick up every time fur does, a la the morality-of-diamonds chat for ring sourcing; choosing them shouldn't be easy or discussion-free. veal and foie gras are next.
