Anon 1:34 is mostly correct. However, you can unbutton the middle button on a 3-button but it is the first to be buttoned and the last to be unbuttoned. Another general rule: when you stand button; when you sit unbutton. Ladies, it is up to you to teach us a lot of these rules. for some reason it is trendy for guys to "not care" about many things, dressing is one of them.
you must have made this PSA before, because I remember insisting Brian leave his bottom button undone on our wedding day (you know, that one time he wore that one suit)
My husband totally knows this rule and the unbutton when you sit rule, but did he remember to unbutton for our seated wedding photos? Nope. My eye is drawn to it anytime I look at them. Which, luckily, is almost never.
I was so proud of my hubs when on our wedding day he a.) opened all of his groomsmen's breast pockets (even though they all thought they were supposed to be sewed shut), b.) folded six pocket squares correctly, AND c.) told them to unbutton the bottom button.
Agree with esb on the sideboob thing. To a degree. No more than 10% side-cleavage or it looks too deliberate. This is an absolutely arbitrary estimated rule I just made up.
@Jen my intention was not to single out this VERY GOOD LOOKING couple. i merely wanted to point out a groom-style gaffe that i see in way too many wedding photos.
phewf, i just checked our wedding photos and my groom and dad did not button. i had no idea but if that's what the mad men do that's what all men should do.

On a three-button suit, from top to bottom:
ReplyDeleteSometimes
Always
Never
Two-button:
Sometimes
Never

ReplyDeleteMen just generally need to be more like Jon Hamm, no?
ReplyDeletealso, I'm sorry, but side boob at your wedding isn't sexy.
ReplyDeletejust sayin'
@kat WHAT'S WRONG WITH SIDE BOOB?

ReplyDelete@Lauren and I thought *I* was obsessive.

ReplyDelete@eastsidebride SIDE BOOB NOT OK AT WEDDING, MKAY?
ReplyDeletesave it for the honeymoon.
Told you.
ReplyDeleteit infuriates my husband when men don't know how to wear their clothes.
ReplyDeletehe's a sartorial grump.
@kat, so inner side boob and copious amounts of top boob are totally fine, but outer side boob is not? That rationale doesn't make any sense.
ReplyDelete@anon 8:43 ummmm... what? not what I said at all.
ReplyDeletein a nutshell: you should get a dress that fits. if you're busting out (in any direction, from any place in the dress), it doesn't fit right.
First anon: I heard that sometimes, always, and never awhile back, but I think I have to propose a new one.
ReplyDeleteWearing three button suits: never.
I just went and looked at my wedding photos because I have no idea about this stuff. But apparently my husband does. Yay.
