Le Bridal Cap

Would you all give me an opinion on the new "bridal cap" trend?

(I didn't know that's what they were called, but that's what Twigs & Honey is calling them, so I'm gonna go with it.)

I mean. Myra makes the thing look as pretty as it could possibly look....... But I can't help thinking........

CANCER PATIENT?

  1. ohh, like anything, they can be taken too far.

  2. I in no way believe this French wedding was "effortless," as 100 Layer Cake wants us to believe, but I'd have to say this is the only example I've seen of a bridal cap executed to perfection. Maybe being in France helps?

  3. My link embedding did not work one bit, so here it is straight:

  4. Like many trends, some people can pull it off and others not so much. I suspect that most of us are in the "not so much" camp when it comes to bridal caps.

  5. i think it could be very beautiful on the right person, of course. it is so "french". it would have to be the RIGHT bride.

  6. It isn't man repellent but I can't say I like it.

  7. That girl looks sickly (in a chemo patient way), but maybe that's just her face.

  8. i think it looks amazing. but the model looks like Clara Bow ... and she probably makes everything look good.

what i know for sure is that thing would look dumb as shit on ME.

  9. A. She looks like the Childlike Empress from the Neverending Story.

    B. It's not the worst accessory I've ever seen, but the updo under the skully cap was the worst decision they could have made styling this thing. Put that one some beachy bohemian bride and she'll make it look amazing.

    C. Do not try to watch The Neverending Story after reading this. It's kind of ridiculously boring as an adult. Trust me, this I know.

  10. I'm with Zan. Definitely not digging this one. I only approve of trends that aren't so tricky to get right - leads to fewer unfortunate wedding regrets 30 years later.

  11. I think they're adorable but, the FH would loathe them!

  12. I think they look pretty when they're not so defined like Kate Moss' bridal cap-veil hybrid.

  13. It reminds me of the veils from the 1920s. Definitely romantic looking. But it's one of those styles that only looks good on certain women.

  14. I love them! Seriously considering getting one for my wedding...just not sure I can pull it off.

  15. Hmm... Has a 20s cloche vibe. I like the ones without the veil part better. Could look good on a short haired bride with finger waves and a flapper style wedding dress, but maybe too literal?

    Still mulling it over.

  16. I second Ms. Bunny, I immediately thought 20s. If that's sort of what you're going for, maybe, probably not.

But then again, I was called "timeless" as I rejected everything in a WIC bridal salon this weekend so perhaps I'm not the fashion forward person to ask.

  17. I think that girl definitely looks a bit sickly - why didn't the makeup artist do something about the bags under her eyes?? The French one though, I love. So without veil, I'm in.
(Although to call renovating an international wedding venue "effortless" baffles me completely.)

  18. All I know is Gallic girls seem to look great in these, but every time I try to put ANY kind of hair-covering scarf contraption on my head, my better half freaks out that I am turning "Little Evie" on him. And who wants to evoke Grey Gardens on their wedding day?

  19. following up on Maddie's point, i think it's okay if your wedding also has a luck dragon and/or you're french, but otherwise...

(also unwatchable now? the dark crystal. holy shit those gelflings are annoying.)

  20. I knew someone who had a 1920's veil from her grandmother that was similar to this style of veil. I have no problem with vintage - I wore a vintage wiggle dress for my wedding - but I think a cap just looks too dated. There's a fine line between vintage-classic and vintage-costume. Yet French women seem to be able to do whatever they want and still look gorgeous.
    I'm on the fence.

  21. My husband has recently forced me to watch The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, NeverEnding Story ... no wonder I woke up mad at him this morning. Ha. Or it could have something to do with the significant amount of whiskey consumed on a Monday night.

Anyway ... bridal cap. No. Ick.

  22. It would look dumb on anyone who's not a model.

And it looks dumb on models, too.

  23. The thing about vintage style is know what to pick and choose from a time period so a look is "inspired by" rather than "straight out of 1926 and not in a good way."

    I vote NO.

  24. ESB- thanks. Edie, not Evie. oops. pre-coffee comment.

    ReplyDelete
  25. WHOA, halfpint. THE DARK CRYSTAL IS / WAS / ALWAYS WILL BE AMAZING.

i think it was the whiskey.

    ReplyDelete
  26. All this mention of Neverending Story makes me think of poor Jonathan Brandis.

And I've seen the cap look gorgeous on a select few models/glamorous ladies with major style, but I don't think the look is for the everyday bride. So nope, not on board as I definitely fall in the 98% of people it would look dumb on.

  27. I think it's interesting but it's something that will look very outdated very quickly. Also what if you have cute bangs? Where do you put your cute bangs in this?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ Maddie - Childlike Empress!!!! Also, very sad to hear that it doesn't hold up for adults. Perhaps if I drink first?

@ lauren - The Dark Crystal, too?! I'm sad.

At least Labyrinth will always be there. On the wedding theme, I was pretty sure that if I ever got married, it would be to David Bowie, as the Goblin King. Those white pants!

@ esb - I'd have to agree with you, re: bridal caps.

  29. Attitude is everything. The French bride looked great, but she's French. Nonetheless, I think the expression 'cringe-worthy' will start appearing in reference to this type of thing in a few years.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Depends on the bride, face and head! Think it's gorg on that particular model though. So '20s. Love it in that instance. No to cancer!

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. i think they're awesome IF you have a bob, and your *actual* style is vintage-esque.

    2. one would have looked lovely with *my* wedding dress, and i did happen to have a bob on the day i got married.

    3. now i'm kind of pissed i didn't think of it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. have you NO boundaries? "cancer patient" so FUCKING OFFENSIVE

    ReplyDelete
  33. Very Great Gatsby-esque. I don't think it looks "cancer patient" like, rather flapper era. If you're going for that look and have the right size and shape head, it will look great, but like those Gone With Wind type hats that so many brides wore in the 70s--awful on the wrong person. Plus you have to have the panache to carry it off.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like them. The name 'bridal cap' however, is a little 'contraceptive', no?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I neither think "cancer" nor "1920s" - I think "pirate". And "pirate" CAN be awefully trashy (not the good kind). I don't like the way most of these things seem to be knotted in the back - just to make it look ..yes effortless. It's very 80s bandanas to me. And the ones without the veil is neither a hat nor a veil - normally I dig these kinds of hybrid things, but here I really don't. Wear an awesome hat or a veil, but not this thing...

    bridal cap perfection...

    ReplyDelete
  37. oops! the link didn't work... point is she looks perfect in a bridal cap!

  38. @Anon: Upon first read, I cringed at "cancer patient" descriptor, too. But this site is not intended for the easily offended.

@Jess & @Celia: I'm with you ladies. You must have an overall vintage aesthetic OR you must be Kate Moss. If either criteria is met, you're golden. xo.

  39. Um I have a friend whose wife wore one on their wedding day 3 years ago. She still thinks she looked awesome and I think she looked ridiculous. It depends on the bride I guess and if she can rock it. PS. this girl had a bob and wore a vintage dress. It still looked dumb. It would however be perfect for a flapper girl Halloween costume.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have cancer and I'd never wear that!

    ReplyDelete
  41. she looks like one of the ghosts you encounter in Disney's haunted mansion

    ReplyDelete
  42. my ma wore one, it was gorge. don't think i could rock it

    ReplyDelete
  43. Just one of the lovely bridal cap ever. :D

    ReplyDelete
  44. i would like it more if it wasn't so ... there. it kind of reads doo-rag right now, a further back position (a la Kate Moss) would make this AMAZING!
