Jr. Bridesmaids Contest FAIL

REALLY, you guys??

I am so meh on the dresses you picked. The only two I liked were either in the wrong color scheme or not avail in the size we need.

Nobody gets a postcard.

Lauren's probably right that you need to take the minimaid shopping. Why not buy her some other clothes while you're at it?? And yes, rip the tags off.

But just to school you on how it's done.... Here are a few minimaid-ish dresses I like from Revolve clothing (which has a lot of XS options in fall colors).

At top: Vava by Joy Han Gabrielle Mini ($63), Directly above: BB Dakota Nelly Scattered Leaves Tank Dress ($52)

Indah Jordan One Sleeve Mini Dress ($83)

Patterson J. Kincaid Harlow Belted Dress ($97)

  1. hahaa it is totally chic and classy up in here

  2. Really? A 13-year old in a one-shouldered dress? The nail in the coffin of my old-fashionedness.

  3. Wait, I thought the questioner mentioned that the minimaid *wasn't* tiny? I need to go back and re-read.

  4. @LPC lady, did you see some of the crap that people suggested?? SCRAPS OF CHIFFON.

  5. i don't know. the kid is still only 13. these dresses up here look older to me. but hey, what do i know.

  6. @Rachel i took not tiny to mean not rail thin... but she's 13, so if she wears a woman's dress i think she'll need an XS or a S. certainly not a LARGE.

but what the fuck do i know.

  7. I know it's blasphemy, but the junior j crew ones seemed along the right lines. these look a little too old for a 13 year old, but like LPC, that could just mean I'm not down with the tweens

  8. @ esb- I re-read and I think you're right. But it would so depend on the kid. I was as tall at 13 as I am now, although shaped somewhat differently. It's a tough age.

Anyways, I never give advice on shopping because I'm totally unqualified.

  9. Is the first pic (red dress) supposed to be a joke? If that model isn't dead she's only one self-induced vomit away.

  10. You know what's being totally neglected here? Is that 13-year-olds know pretty much EXACTLY what kind of free dress they want. And if you try to pick it out for them, you have a 70% chance of missing the mark.

I know that what I wore at 13 was certainly not representative of what was fashionable (what can I say? I was counter-culture).

    Take. Her. Shopping.

  12. probably i should get the postcard.

  13. Sorry ESB, I really don't see how any of these picks are any better than some of the others suggested previously. Also, I would argue that "not tiny" is a delicate way of telling you the same thing it would mean for an adult. I had a size D chest already at that age and I sure wasn't a ladies XS or S.

Maddie has it right - she knows what she has been longing for so just take her shopping and let her pick it out.

  14. Thirteen has to be the worst age for a tween girl! They grow at such different rates and ways. Sorry, I think you were very off the mark on the above dresses and I would default to the very plain JCrew dresses and perhaps get a hairband or belt to jazz it up. As my sister says, "A teenager's idea of classy is very different from a grown up's idea of classy."

  16. i know the brief was "no bubble skirts," but i love this (hell, i'd wear it); special dispensation because it's lamé?

  17. I think the Delia's one wins too, but this Rachel Roy says 13 year old girl in the best possible way

  18. am i the only one who thinks letting a thirteen year old pick out her own dress for a wedding party could end up being totally catastrophic? i don't know about you guys, but when i was thirteen, i didn't know shit about shit... especially when it came to picking appropriate attire for a wedding.

that delia's one is right on the money.

  19. Ew on the top image. Ew and not appropriate for a youngin'

  20. I love this Rachel Roy:

It is slightly above your budget ($129), but her website does put things on clearance after a bit and you can also often find her line marked down at Macy's.

I agree that letting her pick could be a bubble skirt heinous dress mess.

  21. Also concur on the Delia's. The ugly purple one I linked to last time was this silhouette.

  22. My 13-yr-old chubby cousin wore a shiny black satin dress (with white ribbon / flower detail at the waist) to my wedding. She was dressed very grown up, slightly tacky (but not skanky). My 11- and 8-yr-old cousins were dressed much younger.

I would avoid patterns - I get the sense kids aren't that keen on them - maybe they are afraid of looking dorky? All 3 little cousins were in solids.

My cousin wore a shiny solid turquoise halter dress to another wedding a year ago.

  27. I dunno. I thought girl's 16 was bigger than women's XS, more like a small or a 6, but maybe I'm way wrong on that.

I don't think a one shoulder dress is the best idea for a 13 year old who is probably still figuring out how to wear a bra and almost certainly doesn't own a strapless one.

And did everyone forget how to use HTML for links?

    Here's a reminder.

    The Delia's dress is fine.
