Dear ESB,
My wedding is fast approaching and for the first 6 months of searching for a dress, I was dead set on finding something vintage. It took me that long (and several purchases) to admit to myself that I’d have a better chance of encountering a unicorn than a vintage wedding dress even close to my size (and in my budget). So I went with a new dress that I love and makes my mom very happy.
Rewind back to vintage dress shopping, and I come across this beautiful lace wiggle dress that fits me perfectly (and I mean perfectly!). It’s clearly not my wedding dress, but I bought it anyway. It’s about twice as much as I would ever spend on a dress without a specific place to wear it, so, I’m thinking rehearsal dinner. The thing is, it is in the cream color family. I would say more of a beige-ish with gold accents. I know your rule about wearing anything close to white on the night before the wedding, but it’s sooo pretty. And perfect for my evening, cocktail-style rehearsal dinner (not my afternoon picnic wedding).
Should I go against your highly regarded advice, or find something else to wear?
Sincerely,
Pining Over Vintage

oh god, this made me laugh. Thanks esb.
ReplyDeleteDo it, duh.
ReplyDeleteI wore white to my rehearsal dinner and so did just about every bride I know. nbd
ReplyDelete^^Yup. White to a rehearsal just seems right. Wear the damn dress.
ReplyDeleteWEAR IT!!
ReplyDeleteWEAR IT + SEND PICS.
ReplyDeletep.s. have you found your wedding dress? 'cause you KNOW we'd help you in that dept. xo.
WEAR WEAR WEAR.
ReplyDeleteI wore cream. And it was helpful, actually, because people knew who I was right away and it saved a lot of energy and directions-giving.
Yep, I am wearing white to mine in a few weeks. It's a cocktail dress I bought on ebay that I thought might be my wedding dress, but was persuaded that it was too casual. (I think my sister's words were, "When else will you have an excuse to wear a big white dress?") Since original dress is so pretty, I don't want to waste it.
ReplyDeleteHaHa! POV here. I needed this. Thanks! (didn't think this would ever get posted). xoxoxo
ReplyDeletenicole, yes I have my dress:)
and esb, that photo is beyond perfect. if only you knew...
For the love of gawd, do not hold yourself hostage to the opinion of random people on the internets.
ReplyDeleteFuck what other people think. If you love the dress, wear it.
Wear the hell out of it, POV.
ReplyDeleteI suspect the wearing of a beige-ish dress and the disregarding of esb's advice may lead to armageddon. Alternatively nothing bad will happen. Try it and see.
ReplyDeleteWear the wiggle dress, dummy.
ReplyDeletechances are slim that someone at your rehearsal dinner will quote ESB at you
ReplyDeleteDear ESB, please make all my decisions for me.
ReplyDeleteWear the dress. Send pics.
So done.
ReplyDeleteLady wear the white dress... Stop asking for advice from someone that thinks wearing a crown is an acceptable accessory, while a tiara is just too princessy.
-that bitch from Germany
AHAHAHAHAHAHA!
ReplyDelete@ that bitch from Germany
ReplyDeleteI agree with some of the things you said the first time you commented, and now it's time to move on.
POV obvs cares about ESB's saavy advice and her advice doesn't work for you.
Perhaps it's time to start you own blog?
-Elizabeth Nancy
@Nikki - I refuse to believe that's true. Can I troll rehearsal dinners just for the opportunity to prove it wrong?
ReplyDeleteFYI, ESB is holding a gun to my head right now and forcing me to read and comment, even though I don't often agree with her opinions. BUT SHE'S MAKING ME DO IT AND NOW SHE IS TWISTING MY ARM.
ReplyDelete@Miss Georgia THAT'S NOT WHAT I TOLD YOU TO SAY
ReplyDelete@Maddie - now I'm cracking up picturing you nudging brides "psst - not to be a bitch, but I CANNOT BELIEVE you wore white to this rehearsal dinner!" ... and then hand them a URL
ReplyDelete@Nikki - I'll only do it if I get to channel Christine Baranski. Or Cici from "The Nanny."
ReplyDelete@Maddie - totally ashamed that I get the Nanny reference
ReplyDeleteGo for it!! wear it!!! and of course... show us pics!!
ReplyDeleteWear it! Please please send pics after the rehearsal dinner!
ReplyDeleteDuh, do it. I ignored ESB's direct advice and wore a golden-cream dress I sent her a picture of. AND the bride loved it; she said she totally didn't give an crap about that rule.
ReplyDeleteI thought the whole point of this blog was breaking the rules, not creating new ones. I always take ESB's suggestions as "you don't have to do THIS... you could do THAT instead". Of course if some traditional or bridal trendy thing makes you happy then you should TOTALLY DO IT.
ReplyDeletewear it and have a fucking blast !! i think LeVar Burton said it best with "BUT you don't have to take MY word for it."

ReplyDeleteESB, best answer ever.
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure the point is to just wear whatever you feel good in, in any color, anytime, rehearsal or otherwise.
for the love of GOD, bitch from Germany- GET A HOBBY! if you dont like esb or her advice, KICK ROCKS! You're so frigging obnoxious.
ReplyDeletelove the bitch from germany. fuck yeah.
ReplyDeletei did not wear white to my rehearsal but I did wear a badass helmut lang dress that my hubs had given me. It wasn't new but no one had seen me in it before and I looked awesome, felt great and got tons of compliments. If you have a dress (no matter the color) that makes you feel hot and special then rock it.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the bitch from germany! Soooo right :)
