Hi ESB,
My best friend M is marrying my FH and me in October and we are trying to decide what he should wear to perform the ceremony. FH is wearing a gray suit and I am wearing an off-white vintage dress. What do you think of M wearing a light blue suit (like a vintage blue color)? Or maybe dress pants, vest, tie and sneaks? The wedding is cocktail casual, I think light blue and gray and off white would look nice all together.
You have any ideas on where I should look? We are on a budget too, of course.
Thanks!!
xo

NO VEST + TIE WITHOUT A JACKET. Not a fan. Never been a fan.
It'll just make M look like a) he forgot his jacket or b) he was too cheap to buy one.
Focus on finding a great suit that fits. Who gives a sh*t what color it is?
I highly recommend Wasteland for second-hand suit shopping. (We bought H's Jil Sander there for about $200.)
The Flashdance, who is always well turned-out, swears by Jake Vintage: "like an episode of mad men. the main dude there, jonathan, is a fucking gem."

That Jon Hamm, he can wear a suit.
ReplyDeleteIf your officiant gets a a nice dark suit he can wear it to all future suit-wearing activities! If he has a suit in light blue, he can't.
ReplyDeleteOh man, when I read light blue I had a vision of a scene from "Dumb and Dumber." I agree with Miss K above, and I think dark (not necessarily black, but a darker shade of gray?) will be just fine.
ReplyDeleteanonymous read my mind. i thought of the top hats even.
ReplyDeleteanyway, i thought all men had at least one suit? my brother officiated our wedding and owns a tie company, so neckwear wasn't an issue and he already owns a few suits. we let him wear one of his dark suits and it was fine. if he owns a suit, as long as it isn't some crazy color, let him wear that. if not, go find him a nice dark colored suit he can wear to future dressy occasions.
Agree with anon that light blue = dumb and dumber!
ReplyDeleteBtw my husband just started wearing suits for work and I'm at a loss as to what looks good (the pants always seem weirdly droopy). So please esb continue to post man-suit stuff.
He should obvously just wear Jon Hamm. But then, if it were me, I might not get married.
ReplyDeleteWe got my husband's suit for our wedding via Haute Look. It's a designer suit that retailed for $600; we got it for $199. Sign up here: http://www.hautelook.com/invite/416121. You should also sign up for Gilt Groupe: http://www.gilt.com/invite/nicoleboddington - they are currently having a Michael Kors suit sale. Good luck! xo.
ReplyDeleteYUMMO.
ReplyDeleteWhat Melissa said!
Just have Jon Hamm officiate your wedding.
ReplyDeleteHi guys! Thanks for all the advice! I should have been more clear, I didn't mean powder blue, I just meant not navy. Something more like this: http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=522975&CategoryID=10257
ReplyDeletebut one that doesn't cost 600 smackers:)
ESB, I'll def check out Wasteland and Jake Vintage. You're the best.
xo
@CC unless your officiant friend M is trendy (and skinny) it would be hard to pull off and re-wear that Marc Jacobs suit even though it looks cool.
ReplyDeleteHey ESB,
ReplyDeleteI haven't even read this post yet, but none of that matters. My day just started off in the right way with that vision you used as your image. Thanks girl.
I echo you @snarkycat - I was already having the grumps until I saw that. Now I'm calm. I will imagine all people in my day as Hamm, and I will be nice to them.
ReplyDelete@Jess-He is both.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I was more referencing the color, not the style.
ReplyDeletemmmmm Hamm......
ReplyDeletesorry, what was the topic again?
the light blue suit idea sounds kinda cool to me (provided it's not a ruffled tux), but only if : 1) he already owns a light blue suit and 2) it's perfectly tailored and he doesn't look like my grandpaw when we wears it.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't all men wear suits like Jon Hamm?
