fess up

Do you watch the momversations? I mean, without, you know, being a mom?

Yesterday Peonies asked, "Is anyone else addicted to the momversation videos?" and I think she found my answer a little smug. Yikes, okay my answer was more than a little smug.

But the truth is I don't watch them to pat myself on the back and say, "Man I'm so glad I don't have to deal with issues like miscarriage or circumcision or whatever. Lucky me!" I think maybe I watch them to torture myself. To pick the scab? Because H-town and I are 95-97% sure we don't want kids at this point (and I am not young enough to waste any time if I want em). But there's some part of me that needs to, yes, torture myself about it.

Just a wee image of me melodia's Parker that I happen to have stored on my phone. SEE? I DON'T HATE BABIES.

  1. I want a kid, and I'm pretty sure that site would be enough to make me NOT want one. Or at least to raise it in the wilderness without any other moms around. Which I'm planning anyway.

  2. I had never heard of this until just now. I want kids one day, but after clicking that link? I think now I am scared.

  3. I swear it was not my intention to bring everyone else over to the martini drinking maserati driving globe trotting dark side. OOPSY.

  4. Meh. I have a kid, he's two and he's amazing. Like life-changingly amazing (obv.) And the best mistake I ever made. Sorry to get all gooey but I needed to balance. Ummm... I don't get it. I mean, it's OK not wanting kids, but what is so scary?

  6. I love them, and I don't want kids at the moment. Ok, I don't really love all of them. I love the ones with Maggie and with... Chookalinks... and with Alice... and the bitter comic from LA. And I love rolling my eyes at some of the ladies who I would never ever name.

Did you see the one where Maggie busted out the sex wig and handcuffs, talking about how to keep your relationship fresh after a baby? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

  7. I've never heard of them before now, and don't really plan on checking the vids out. All I need to know about having/raising kids I learned from my awesome parents during my awesome childhood. I don't want any kids anytime soon, but just because I have no delusions about what it takes to raise a child successfully and want to be prepared. But damnit, when I'm ready, I'll have a kickass kid or two.

  8. i need to learn to stop going to links you post.

i want kids. they're smelly and messy and it's kinda scary to think i'm gonna have the capacity to screw up some little person. but josh and i are so happy together and have so much love. it only makes sense to spread that love and happiness.

that didn't sound nearly as cheesy in my head.

  10. I'm a mom of three year old twin boys. It's terrifying and magnificent all at once. Practically everyday ends up being an intense self-growth "workshop". For me, this is the highest calling. But that's me. I really respect people who know they don't really want to do the "kid thing" and don't do it. There are people who become parents because of external pressure or some vague idea that it is what one does. Those are terrible reasons to have kids. Several of my girlfriends are "no kids" ladies (as in considering having tubal ligation) and I applaud them for knowing themselves well enough to understand that about themselves. Anything you see in the media is going to be sensational or it wouldn't be worth watching. No reason to let it influence your personal decisions :)

  11. i watch them, but i wouldn't say it's to torture myself; i'm certain that i don't want to be a mother (though i can't wait to be a cool aunt; rather selfish of my sisters to keep me waiting on that, i think). it's more more like a really big-ticket fish tank, i think: full of lovely, fascinating creatures that don't breathe the same thing i do.

  12. Oh my god, yes - I thought I was the only one. I'm neither baby-crazy nor anywhere in the realm of being ready for a baby, but it's so crazily compelling.

  13. You know those weird ladies that touch other people's kids on the street. I am that ladies with other people's dogs. Some people (e.g., "holier than thou" moms) find it offensive I'd rather have a house of saved dogs instead of children. What I say is, chill out, ladies. Chill. the fuck. out. (P.S. I shouldn't have watched those (multiple) momversations. Ugh.)

  15. Ok, I've composed myself.
I love you ESB, truly ♥ you but go suck a fat one for introducing momversation to the unaware. I'd rather refer to moms on the net.

I'm 100% with Dominique. I'm very content with being the fun random Aunt right now.
    Puppy > Baby

CEVD: ♥! Franny and Parkies are totally "websties". They're the best pups with major internet face-time.

  19. I watch the momversations...but only the ones Dooce is a part of...I find her perspective on raising children to be refreshing. I do want kids, but don't get all idealistic about it. I feel like I have a responsibility as a smart, confident and loving person to raise children if only to counteract all the morons popping out idiots and then neglecting and abusing them.

  20. I'm weird. I'm do not have any kids and I'm super content to not have any (right now/ever?), but I really like watching momversations videos. I started because, like the rest of the internet, I have a major crush on Dooce.

I also am not married OR engaged. The BF and I have been together for 6 years and we are stoked to spend the rest of our lives together, but we both really don't want a wedding or a marriage for a long time. Obviously, I also read wedding blogs. (I have a major crush on you, esb, and Meg over at practical wedding.)

I think I really like hearing about women being women and living their lives and dealing with social expectations and personal expectations. Maybe I'm just trying to torture myself about not wanting wedding/marriage/kids/etc right now, just like you're torturing yourself? Maybe I'm just effing weird.

  21. Dude. I didn't think your reply was smug, I just thought it was funny because you used to be kinda certain you didn't want to get married.

I want kids (lots, possibly 6. Like the Weasleys) but that's not why I watch momversation because as with most things I don't really give a crap how anyone else does it. I do however like the fishbowl thing of watching very smart very funny women who all have very different ideas talking about stuff. How often do you get to see that? The childrearing thing is secondary.

  22. if anyone should have 6+ kids, it's definitely p.

  23. oh the dog is so beautiful!
    and i love being a dogmum...most of the time ; )

all the other stuff is pretty much all up in the air.
    there is this "maybe-one day-when i grow up-thought"
of having kids- on the other hand i really want to get
my own shit together and i love my work.
so lets wait and see and be happy. no pressure.

  24. f kids.. i want parker..
srsly though.. i don't think its kids that i want.. i just want to be prego and have a big pot belly sticking out without feeling fat

  25. I only watch them to try and figure out how to have Maggie's curly, red hair. ONE DAY I WILL WAKE UP AND IT WILL BE SO. Whether or not I want kids, I def want curly red hair.

  26. That site is a little too smug for me. I just read an article where someone wrote in about the guilt of having to work (something I'm all too familiar with) and the response they gave from an "expert" was, "In the last decade, we've lived in an environment where both parents have to work to live the life they want." I find that so offense...a) because dual income households were not invented in the 2000s and b) because it's not always about living the life they want, so much as it is a necessity. I even left a snarky comment, which I never do!

  27. omg I thought I was the only one without child that actually watched them.
