Lately I've been harping on trends that drive me up the wall (let's face it, just the word trend drives me up the wall). So I decided it was time to step back and recognize a few wedding ideas that rock.
1. Photo booths. Whether you rent the classic or go with a modern update, people effing love to pose for pictures. And I for one wish I had more photos of my wedding guests.

2. Mason jars. I love em for cocktails, florals, and especially votives. They have a fabulous rustic chic vibe, and they're amazingly photogenic. Leave the rings on to get an extra glimmer from your candles. (Jars of the non-mason variety are good too, and easier to collect.)

3. Shrugs. The bigger and fluffier the better. Did Elizabeth Dye just hint that she's working on a shrug inspired by this one....?

4. Creative catering. I am a sucker for a backyard barbecue. Or a wedding catered by a taco truck! How rad is this?

5. What am I leaving out? Please submit your ideas! I'm getting very lonely listening to myself think.
ummm....
ReplyDeletere-using anything...upcycling....green...reducing...recycling...getting stuff from thrift stores...ebay...craigslist...
that's a *trend* i like. re-using things and not creating waste at your wedding shouldn't be a trend, though, really. it should be status quo.
Alternative officiants. Friends, family, etc.
ReplyDeletecupcakes and balloons! (just kidding, i swear) i like christina's trend so i'm just gonna go with that.
ReplyDeleteany way taco stand?! TACO STAND?!?! now i really want a re-do. or perhaps we just need to do it up big for every anniversary.
Thanks for sharing. These are great ideas that never get old!
ReplyDeleteTaco stand sounds awesome. I'm also a fan of the ice cream truck.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking a taco truck for the anniversary party now! we did bbq at the reception, so low brow and so yummy.
ReplyDeletep.s. I love that you say rad.
bring hella rad back.
ReplyDeleteI'm working my way up to it ;)
ReplyDeletebashing a piñata instead of a bouquet/garter toss!
ReplyDeleteYesssssssss
ReplyDeleteGreat headwear?
hella pushy, aren't i?
ReplyDeletebrides on bikes... i know it's done, and re-done... but there is something so whimsical about the whole idea.
ReplyDeletelove your blog, I tag countless entries in my "someday" bookmark.
I've always loved #4
ReplyDeletemaybe it's the fact that I'm mexi but I've always loved the idea of having a taco truck or stand cater my future wedding(that is if I ever get married)
p.s. you post the best things for a wedding obsessed girl like me to daydream about
Music by friends and family and pudding instead of cake. And cupcakes (piss off, they're a classic. You're just bitter because they give you a sore head.)
ReplyDeleteAhhh I love all these "trends".
ReplyDeleteI soo soo soo want a photobooth in my wheneverithappends wedding.
I even begged my college to drop 2k on a pb rental for my grad show. I can't get enough of them. I'd be totally selfish and want to keep all my guests' photos tho.
I think everyone's had enough of feathers and bird theme but it'll never get old w me. But yes-cupcakes have been murdered and taxidermied by this point.
I really love the chocolate fountain and/or candy bars... i mean, it can never be too sweet, right?

I will now and forever love the cupcake tower 'trend'...cupcakes rock!
ReplyDeleteI like goofy first dances, friends who give blessings instead of toasts, friends (not professionals) playing a song at the ceremony, I like it when the bridal party or groomsmen do something clever (beyond getting drunk!)
ReplyDeleteI don't like sit down dinner, pre-made "specialty" drinks (Mojitos??? Really??!!) DJs who talk while I'm tryin to grind, akward photo "ops" and cake cutting.
not a wedding idea, but related to photo booths, and agreed, everyone loves a photo booth:

He he. I actually saw the word trend in the title and almost skipped the post in my reader and then noticed it was from you. Major double take.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm on board with all these things too. A taco truck wedding would make me so very happy.
Note to self: never use the word trend again.
ReplyDeleteHe he indeed!
"Trends" I love (let's say cultural zeitgeist, ok?): Weddings at home, non-wedding wedding dresses, quirky/funny readings, not making your bridal party match, piñatas (yessss! Not a trend yet, but lets make it one), Mexican paper flags, community building as part of the wedding, legal gay weddings, short dresses, wedding pants (again not a trend, but let's DO IT), doing your own flowers, innovative ceremony music choices (No. Nothing currently on the top whatever list, sorry.), NOT DOING FAVORS, welcome picnics instead of rehearsal dinners, wedding pie
ReplyDeleteI'm over: Mason jars (sorry, saturation point), cupcakes, shoe shots, chocolate fountains (sorry AmyJean, way over that), telling your guests what to wear (just no)
Backyard, homemade weddings. I don't think I could ever get tired of those. And I, OBVIOUSLY, will never tire of jars. I have a cupboard full of jars at home and I love them in their recycled usefulness.
ReplyDeleteAnd I 100%, whole-heartedly to the point of tears agree with Amanda about having a close friend or family member officiate your ceremony. Which I suppose is not a trend, but seems to be popping up more frequently.
And of course, writing your own vows... an essential, in my opinion.
Hmmm. It seems we will forever love the things we did at our own weddings. Not a bad thing.
ReplyDeletep.s. Meg, didja solve that vase crisis?
ReplyDeleteI'm not doing all those things, but I wish I was, sort of. Some are mutually exclusive though.
ReplyDeleteEhh. Sort of. Maybe? Working on? Maison jars are out, as they wouldn't really mesh with the room, I don't think.
Having a wedding piñata instead of cake. Bashing instead of feeding.
ReplyDeleteyes! i love all of these trends. my sister got married last summer and it was a big old backyard bash with lots of mason jars and wildflowers--handpicked by her three adoring sisters (yes, that's me plus 2 more) the morning of! your blog is so sweet. glad to have found it.
ReplyDeleteI love this list. I consider it the opposite of my own five-point list. I linked it to my blog!

I like the Taco cart idea! I'm a foodie, but love tacos if they are well made.
ReplyDeleteoh my. Well...We're getting hitched at a house (total.dream.) AND we have a friend who happens to own a taco truck. My squeeze really wants them to cater for us at the house. Am beginning to think this would be a wonderful idea.
